The ceremony (to do with Brahmins I believe) I went to had something to do with a black thread which was (i think ) a loop of black tread hung over the neck and under one shoulder. I dont know whether that is called a thread ceremony they did a few other things and mainly the pundit and close family (older people) were hanging around and all the other guests were outside mingling.

ROman, In orthodox hindus, thread ceremony is a rite of passage from childhood to adult-ish hood in assuming some religious responsibility. The thread signifies the circle of life and the kid is now responsible for wearing that thread/or replacements until the next chapter of his life, adulthood where he will don another anew.
Now, if symbolism=spiritualism, then these hindu mullahs should first start by using conditioner after their shampoo, having poofy hair like dharmender ala 1976 is not really that in any more and very very far from god.
