rite....they were land owners, specializing in agriculture. There are many Muslim and Sikh Jatts. There are Jatts in many provinces...Punjab, Sindh, and many more in India...as people have mentioned before.

Jatt is a punjabi caste. There can be Pakistani, Indian, or Sikh Jatts. I won’t comment further so as not to offend anyone but in Chakwal, where my family hails from, Jatts aren’t considered a good caste. But hey, it may be just heresay.

That is one of the worst things about this stupid caste system. All desis act pretty ignorant and ridiculous when it comes to castes. Every caste is looked down upon by the other and everyone has these illusions of granduer thinking theirs is superior most while the others are inferior. In chakwal people look down on jatts, where ever jatts originate from they look down upon awans i suppose, mughals look down on both of them and so on and so forth.

I'm mughal from dad's side but I dont consider being mughal a caste. Never thought of it that way. In my family this doesnt even come up. Do people consider them a caste? haw haiii Patha nahin tha. confused

My friend is a Sikh Jatt (his mom from Pak and dad from India though he calls himself Indian only) and he said Jatts are/were landowners and farmers.

haha munni. I don't know if its a caste or what! Just that people of the subcontinent most often have notions of superiority based on their caste probably why they usually want kids marying within the same caste. Utter BS.

Cat-baji, to answer your original question, triditionally jat include all working farmers from the village.

Their are Jat-chudaries, jat-malies, jat-kanway etc.

Maulla Jat made them very popular.

Oh ok, thanks guys! Oh yeah I know Maula Jat! I think we have the movie at home.

Yeah my friend said they're 'Haryanwis' and I was like, er whats a Haryanwi. lol

I understand thanks, before I thought Jats were only Sikhs.

Jatts - The word Jatt in Webster's Encyclopedic Dictionary is defined as "a member of an Indo-European people of the Punjab. The Jatt's are thoroughly independent in character, and assert personal and individual freedom, as against communal or tribal control, more strongly than any other people. The Jatts are tall with light brown skin, dark eyes and hair.

I've always associated them with sikhs. Even though there are obviously muslim and hindu Jats as well. Sikhs are always talking about jat this and that.

You are totally wrong on sub castes. There is no sub caste in Jatts..a Jatt is a Jatt...either you are one or not. There are probably 200 last names, tribal names amongst jatts like Dhillon, Randhawa, Gill etc but they intermarry among any other last name and socially equal to each other, other than their monetary situation.

There are probably 50 million jatt in Pakistani Punjab, Indian Punjab and Haryana areas. total out of 22 million Sikhs only 60% are jatts. There are about 20-25 million jatts in Pakistan who are muslims and another 10-20 in Haryana most of whom are Hindus. Haryana Jatt call themselves Jaats.

jatts the facts, ChannMahi jatts the facts.

This thread is funny “I’m 50% jatt on my mothers side but 20% mughal coz we got a persian cat” etc etc :hehe:

I’m from the pahlwaan caste, we wrestle.

Some of this seems fishy.

Although the Jats are not a single socio-religious group, as the term is commonly understood today, Jats live in Haryana, Western Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi in North India. Though the common definition refers to only the Hindu Jats, a significant number of Jats are Sikhs and Muslims.

The Jats are not a homogeneous ethnic group living in a particular area and speaking a single language. Rather, they are a people who live scattered around the world among several ethnic groups, yet retain their own identity. This distinction is often based on occupation and heritage.

The Jats are primarily located in northwestern India and southern Pakistan, although there are some communities in Maldives, Russia, and Ukraine. However, their origin, history, and current dispersion are spread much wider. They are said to be of Indo-Aryan (or often, Indo-Scythian) descent.

Jats are a brave, hardworking and independent minded people. Primarily agricultuarists, the Jats led a fairly autonomous political life. Even during the Mughal period, the rule of the state was limited. With the exception of Bharatpur, no Jat kingdoms were founded.

As per the Varna(Caste) system, the Jats are Kshatriyas or the warrior class. As they were outside the rigorous brahmanical social order, this position was not emphasised till the growth of the Arya Samaj among the Jats.

Known for their military prowess, many Jats were recruited into the British-India army during World War I. Before that, they served as fighters in the Persian army. A large number of Jats serve is in the Indian Armed Forces and form one of the largest ethnic groups in the army.

The Green Revolution brought considerable prosperity to the Jats in the late 60s and 70s. The Jat regions in India are among the most prosperous on a per-capita basis. Today, many Jats are well read and some occupy high positions in academic and technical arenas.

Conservative by nature, the Jats rarely marry people from other ethnic groups. Great pride is placed in their ancestry. In fact, all the Jats in a particular village consider themselves to be the descendants of the man whom they believe founded it.

Most Jats are in India are Hindus, the rest being Sikhs or Muslims. While over one half of the Jats in India are Hindus, the rest being Sikhs, the Jats living in Pakistan are primarily Muslim.

The Hindu Jats' religious beliefs are usually non-orthodox. A large number came under the influence of the Arya Samaj in the early part of the 20th century. The Arya Samaji influence played a significant role in shaping the socio-religious identity.

Until recent times, the Sikh Jats seemed to be the least meticulous in their observance of Sikh traditions, leaning more towards Hinduism. The Muslim Jats are Sunnis of the Hanafi school, but are known to have a strong tradition of worshipping many local saints.
