whats a gurti/gurdi?

I have heard it from a lot of peepz including my parents about how my grandma gave me the gurti. So my question is what is it? Y do we give it? Is it a religious or cultural thing? Whats the history behind it? and whom ever gives the gurti, is he/she like a godmother/godfather?

Re: whats a gurti/gurdi?

as far as i know, the word is Gutthi.
it's just the first food (mostly Honey) that usually is fed by Grandparents (or some Buzurgh in the family) to the newborn. i don't know the cultural or religious reasons behind it. probably it just clears the stomach of the newborn? i don't know

Re: whats a gurti/gurdi?

Its Gutti :p

where were you hun :-|

Re: whats a gurti/gurdi?

hun? talking to aunty music??

Re: whats a gurti/gurdi?

o so its gutti, thanx for correcting me guys.

yourfriend but i have heard that we shouldn’t feed newborns with honey. I m still confused and i m not an aunty :halo:

Re: whats a gurti/gurdi?

its not that they give a full spoon of honey or something.... they usually give them a very little amount of it; just for the taste, with the tip of the finger. in pakistan, they usually give them gutti within 1week or probably within less period of time. i think some people give them poodinay ka paani (mint water) as well. i can't say anything if things have changed Now over there.

j/k about the aunty part.

Re: whats a gurti/gurdi?

It's more a cultural rather than religious thing. In reality it has no significance but the implication is that you take a lot of the personality traits of the person who gave you ghurti. Hence the tradition of elders giving ghurti.

Re: whats a gurti/gurdi?

Gurti (Gurrti / Gurthi) in Punjabi

Gutti (Guthi) in Urdu.

its more like traditional/cultural thing. My children had mothers milk as their Gutti/Gurti.

Re: whats a gurti/gurdi?

yup...wat they said. it's like pre-chewed stuff. dont know the significance behind it. dont know if i had it...but try giving one to a kid born here. my oh my...the mum's gonna have a fit!

Re: whats a gurti/gurdi?

'shahid chatana' is just like 'kheer chatana' to bachelors in weddings ..theres no science behind it..its just a tradition

Re: whats a gurti/gurdi?

Isn't there an idiom about gutthee?

E.g. 'uski gutthee mai hai' or something along those lines.

Re: whats a gurti/gurdi?

Re: whats a gurti/gurdi?

I thought the tradition of giving honey to newborn was to ensure that their whole life would be as sweet as honey - have I been deluded???

Re: whats a gurti/gurdi?

we have that in our family..i thought it was also called ghutti....and it could be anything..honey, water, even a person's spit (sounds gross)....and sometimes the whole ghutti thing is so true...sometimes its not....who knows?

Re: whats a gurti/gurdi?

WTF? I've honestly never heard of this gurti/guthi/gurdi/gutti/guthi dealio. I don't think anyone in my family follows this tradition.

Re: whats a gurti/gurdi?

The Islamic name for Ghuti is Tahneek, and doing so is mustahib.
Tahneek is the practice of chewing date and applying a part of the chewed portion to the palate of the child so that it goes down the child's mouth easily. If date is unavailable, one may apply any thing sweet, like sugar-candy, honey or juice, to the child's palate. Thereby, the sunnah is fulfilled.
The veins and the muscles are strengthened. The dental palate, the jaws and the mouth are made active. As a result, it is easy for the child to suck milk from the breast of its mother. A pious and God-fearing scholar or a venerable saint may be invited to do Tahneek or any person the family wishes can do this. Tahneek is mustahib. Sayyidna Abu Musa said, "When my son was born, I brought him to the Noble Prophet, (Sallallaho alaihe Wasallam) who named him Ibrahim and performed his Tahneek with date, blessed him and then returned him to me'' (Bukhari and Muslim) Sayyidna Anas carried the new born son of Sayyidna Abu Talhah to the Noble Prophet. (Sallallaho alaihe Wasallam) chewed a date and gave some of it in the mouth of the child, carried out Tahneek, and named the child, Abdullah (Bukhari and Muslim

Re: whats a gurti/gurdi?

Ghutti- if honey is used its to make the mouth and jaw active to start the process of suckling, it also acts as a natural laxative to help the infant pass the first bowel movement of meconium which is like tar. Doctors in the US do not let you use honey for the fear of boutalism in infants.
