I’m interested in purchasing a laptop soon. Unfortunately I’m not aware of whats GOOD to have with a laptop these days, the best brand, or where the best place to buy it from is.
I’m not interested in a wide screen.
I need it to be fast enough, not celeron! 40gb hard drive at least? (is that the regular these days for laptops?), internal 802.11g, dvd writer.
The most I would like to pay is somewhere around $1,300 CDN (without tax). I don’t know if what I’ve specified is possible with that limited price.
Also, could you please tell me sites/stores that offer financing of paying per month, rather than paying the whole $1,300. Is Dell a good site to purchase from?

I wouldn't recommend DELL unless they offer repair within your city or where they pay for the S&H when you're sending your laptop to them to get it repaired.
Last summer my Xbox was giving me problems. I had to 'mail' it a little outside the city and it costed me over $45. I couldn't drop it off because that's how it worked.
I can't imagine how costly it must be to 'mail' DELL computers if they need to be repaired.
Btw... check out both Futureshop and Bestbuy. They both offer financing and they have more models in store than online.
I have always worked with Dell laptops and I must say that I'm very satisfied with them. Currently I'm using a Dell Latitude D600. I think in Canada the D600 is not even available anymore and has been upgraded to D610. That has the same specs, but a better processor.
^ I'm speaking out of experience. The college where I used to work, everyone was provided with an IBM laptop and I had the opportunity to use various models of 'R' series and the 'T' series ... and I was very happy with the results. However, I've seen many people whine about their SONY laptops and they've had a histroy of problems relting to power etc.
And then again, IBM is/was (can be argued) a reputed player in the 'systems' industry whereas SONY got into manufacturing laptops only a few years ago.
sony got into laptops only a few years ago but it has proven it is better then ibm, as you might know ibm has started to go down. i too am talking from experience i have used all of those computers
