Chav is a derogatory term of dubious origin.

It is generally accepted to have come from the Gypsy/Roma language. In which "Chavi" refers to a reckless child or teenager, as some would say a bit of a loose cannon.

Chav's first came to light in the 1990's during the heyday of Burrbury shirts, tracksuits and hoodies.

Lately any juvenile delinquent in society is considered a Chav.

It's a derogatory term for people who display anti social behaviour and inferior intellect. They tend to be quite gormless as well...and they nearly always have a terrible sense of fashion :D
