Whatmore declares India interest

Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore has confirmed his interest in succeeding Greg Chappell as India coach.

Chappell resigned on Wednesday, two weeks after the team’s first-round exit in the World Cup.

**“If the opportunity comes along, surely any person who is a professional coach and prides himself in doing a good job would be interested,” Whatmore said. **

Whatmore coached Sri Lanka to World Cup success in 1996 and has guided Bangladesh to the Super 8s.

There is huge passion for the game in India. It is a big religion there and there is enormous pressure on the team

Ironically, Bangladesh’s five-wicket win over India in the group stage of this World Cup could have had an impact on Chappell’s future.

The 53-year-old said he was willing to take up the challenge of coaching India.

“Firstly any job is a challenge. I have taken up pretty good challenges in the last 10 years and this will be another big challenge,” Whatmore said.

"There is huge passion for the game in India. It is a big religion there and there is enormous pressure on the team.

"To get the best out of players is a challenge and to work with the selectors who have the best interest of the game in their heart represent challenge, which is very interesting.

“Perhaps there are more distractions there. The sheer weight of interest of the media be it electronic or print the huge popularity with the individuals, they all are distraction to a point.”

The Indian board meets over two days, starting on Friday, to delve into the World Cup debacle and discuss the subject of the next coach.

If India get the services of highly qualified profesional coach than it will be their gain at expense of Bangladesh. If the Indian board does decide to go for Whatmore than I can’t see any reason why they will not be able to land him. Pakistan on the other hand will enjoy the services of a ‘desi’ coach - possibly big mouth Javed, Intikhab Alam, Mudassar Nazar…

Re: Whatmore declares India interest

^ and India will have an edge over Pakistan. Who for now are clueless as to where their national team is going.

Re: Whatmore declares India interest

Do you mean India will have edge over Pakistan in terms of quality of coaching they will get if they hire Whatmore?

Re: Whatmore declares India interest

^ yep. And you never know he might click with the indian team as well as he did with the other 2 south asian teams.

Re: Whatmore declares India interest

OK - I also feel the same. If he goes to India than I feel he is likely to do a lot better job than Chappel. He knows the culture and mentality of the Asian players which will no doubt help.

Pakistan on the other hand may be go in the backwards direction.......

Re: Whatmore declares India interest

pakistan for now should stick with a pakistani coach. Our illiterate players can not work with foreign palyers who have totally different work ethic. same goes with indian players. they will also be better off with a desi coach or watmore.

Re: Whatmore declares India interest

Funny thing:
What the indian team will ask the new coach: "What more can you offer Mr. Whatmore?!!"

Re: Whatmore declares India interest

I am sure his reply would be 'I don't know myself what I can offer you but I know you sure as hell can offer me more money than these Bongalis!'

Re: Whatmore declares India interest

Very unprofessional on part of Whatmore to declare his intentions while he is on an assignment with BD team. :nook:

Re: Whatmore declares India interest

BCCI is a cash cow...all Coaches, physio-therapists want to milk it.

Whatmore should have waited till super-8 is over.* Lekin paisaa seb ko nangaa ker detaa hai.*
This brings in mind something like-- dollar-adiction Vs genuine commitment for team. I am sure Bongalis will burn his effigy once he returns there.

Btw...Whatmore is acceptable to me. But at the moment BCCI should first invest it's energy in figuring out the future team composition and what to be done with our "senior mafia".

team selection is far more important than Coach...sadly due to Chappel resignation whole attention is diverted towards Coach.
