I’m interested in finding out what would a Computer Science degree from FAST University (in Karachi) and a Masters in Science/Computers from LUMS University be equivalent to in Canada?
Re: What would the following be equivalent to in Canada?
Depending on the University and the program the candidate is seeking admission into, it will most likely either be an Honors Bachelors degree with a few advanced credits towards a Masters degree.
I have a friend who was admitted into the U of T Comp Sci Masters program after a Masters from LUMS. He got a couple of credits for courses in which he had good grades.
Re: What would the following be equivalent to in Canada?
Would the bachelors degree from FAST be worth a bachelors here?
In other words the Masters from LUMS wasn't worth much with the exception of a few credits.
Re: What would the following be equivalent to in Canada?
by itself, the Bachelors is not recognized to be equivalent to a bachelors because it is 3 years in duration as compared to the minimum of 4 years of undergraduate education here.
Most probably, the candidate can again apply for some transfer credits and will most likely be admitted into a bachelors program with credits for some first and second year courses.
Re: What would the following be equivalent to in Canada?
not true umar, a bachelors from FAST is four years too now, atleast if the guy has graduated in the past three four years or so. So just like any other decent school from Pakistan it should be acceptable anywhere in the world as a bachelors. I know people from FAST doing phds in UIUC and Stanford directly after their bachelors from FAST.
Re: What would the following be equivalent to in Canada?
o.k. - well if its a four year degree than I stand corrected. My post was based on my experience with a friend of mine who was with me in in Comp Sci undergrad. He was taking courses at the undergrad level to get admitted into the Masters program at U of T.
This was in 1997/98 - things may have changed since.
That being said, things are evaluated a little differently in Canada (at least in the top schools here) than in the U.S. - for e.g. in Canada, you can't get into University after an F.A. / F.Sc. from Pakistan... whereas it can work in the U.S. - basically, they downsize the no. of years of education by a year.
What it really comes down to Sadiyah, is the years of education... to get into a Bachelors program, you need 12 years of education... to get into a Masters, you need 16 years. In addition to these basic requirements, each dept. has its own entrance requirements in terms of specific coursework etc.
Re: What would the following be equivalent to in Canada?
Regardless of official stand of Canada - the Asian education is not considered equivalent to the education (in corporate world).
I would assume back in Asia - a western university will have much credibility just because its western.
Coming back to Q:
If you are looking to enroll. Get into somefin with co-op!
Whats equivalent? Pretty much all similar program from any CDN uni, because they all have a similar standard of education.
Waterloo is considered best in comp. sci in Canada
Re: What would the following be equivalent to in Canada?
I'm not asking for myself. I'm asking for someone who could possibly move here and what would an undegrad (4 years) from FAST and an MS from LUMS would be worth here in Canada.
Re: What would the following be equivalent to in Canada?
As a rule, I find that Asian qualifications are always 1 level below western ones. This is what I have been told.
So:
asia............west
BA = High school leavers/A level/
MA = Bachelors degree
M Phil = Masters
A doctorate is a doctorate.
Re: What would the following be equivalent to in Canada?
Not really... if it were so then I'd have gone to Pak, gotten it in two years and been back, done and settled already.
A doctorate from there is really is worth very little unless you have publications in top-tier journals which again is pretty uphill.
In fact in North America, most people who have Ph.Ds from Europe have a hard time since its relatively easier to get one there. Most people who have a Ph.D. from Europe or Asia require a Post-Doc to get into academia here in North America.
Re: What would the following be equivalent to in Canada?
European education is surely equal to, if not superior, to education in North America. I refer here mainly to the UK, and our friends the Germans.
Re: What would the following be equivalent to in Canada?
It really depends...
Even in England, a lot of schools grant honors bachelors degrees in three years, whereas the minimum requirement in Canada and the U.S. is four years of study.
With me currently doing my Ph.D., I get annoyed sometimes that some the Europeans rarely have extensive coursework requirements, residency requisites and comprehensive exams. Students can jump directly into their thesis proposals and I've seen people get their Ph.D.s in two to three years time even remotely.
Re: What would the following be equivalent to in Canada?
3 years is standard here. I've not heard of someone getting a phd in 2 years.
Re: What would the following be equivalent to in Canada?
Its shorter as its more specialized at BA level, and our schooling standards in high school are far superior.
