About dealing with people who do not show their true face and conspire against others? Would he have applauded them their cunning, or plotted their downfall?

Haven't read The Prince, but Machiavelli would probably take a lot more into consideration than simply how a person behaves when deciding how he should behave around them. Generally, I feel Machiavelli would do whatever gets him more political clout.
Machiavelli would use them and their abilities to further his cause and when they have served their purpose just destroy them.
