- Widows (as result of earthquake) who may not have brothers/parents to take care of?
- Young women/girls who lost their parents/brothers?
- Young children who lost their parents and mama chacha?
- Old people who might have lost their caretakers?
There are chances that some of them will be taken care of by family/extended family/neighbors for short duration. But we all know that not everyone is well-to-do enough to take care of ‘extra’ family members in longer term. Once emotional level goes back to normal, what do you think would happen to above mentioned groups?
We already saw that even when emotional level is high we have exploiters who are trying to exploit the victims (I hope they are taken care off sooner than later) but try to think what would happen 1 year later, 2 years? 10 years to these people.
Any solutions? Not short term, but longer term?

there are a few long term solutions
1) govt takes care of them
2) awaam takes care of them
3) opportnities are created so they can stand on their own feet ..more applicable for widows then for old ppl needing support or children.
or...it is a mix of the three. children can be sponsored, adopted. its the older ppl in need who dont have care takers that would require another approach.

Fraudia, chance of solution "1" can be flushed down fairly easily, if we depend on the government to do it, we all know the condition of "stranded Pakistanis"... these people will be hoarded into camps and live rest of their lives like there. Widows, young women/ladies and children are VERY VERY likely not skilled enough to be able to secure jobs/start businesses.
"2" solution, how can awaam go by doing it? May be someone like "Edhi" can take care, wouldn't they endup living in Edhi shelters forever?
"3" solution, what kind of opportunities can be created which uneducated/unskilled widows can cash in?

is there no 'adopt a grandparent' sponsoring schemes?
lots of ppl r bound to adopt/sponsor kids but shouldn't they be something similar for the elderly who've lost their own sons to take care of them..

it has to be a combo of 3, i dont think that this or any subsequent govt can afford to not do something in this regard
2 solution for awam is not just awam as in edhi but awam at large..taking ppl in, there are ppl who can afford to provide housing for one elderly person. its a question of will.
yea there is a large population in Pakitan that can not afford to do so, but there is a large group that can. while I have received over a dozen emails and calls last week for ppl extremely motivated to adopt children, it is much tougher to bring older ppl overseas due to immigration issues, but that is not the case for ppl in Pakistan.
there will be ppl who can not fend for themselves i.e. the elderly and the children, elderly, u just have to take care of them until its their time. kids u have to prepare for a future bygiving themopportunities for education and training. the widows or disabled, u have to provide training and opportunities to be self reliant, but support them until they are self reliant.
of those affected, there will be some that will be taken in by family, or those who are functioning as a family unit but need time to get on their feet, so the number of ppl who have no one will be a subset. question is how strong is the will, and how much of it will be lip service.
As far as #3- skills can be taught, u can either give the women charity or give them skills and opportunities to take care of themselves, whether its cottage industry, or establishment of large mills there in a joint cooperation betwene govt and industry where industry gets some tax breaks for doing do, and thus has a sustainable situation.

i would support a temporary tax levy, a certain amount per person per year for ppl who have overseas pakistani cards, and a certain charge or bump in taxes..well forget taxes there are cheats who dont pay jack, but maybe some excise on utility or entertainment or travel that can fund soem programs to support the survivors.
there has to be leadership, and private sector alone can not do this, and niether can teh govt.
