I wud like to say something about this topic. Tho i m not a scholar neither i m complete follower. but i m just sayin as wht i knw abt it.
First of all, Bohris are muslims.... It is just a sect of muslim relligion.
They follow everything wht our beloved prophet has told. They recite holy quran and believe its aayaats...They are also believers of Prophets son in law and 4th kalifa Maula Ali and tht makes them Shias. They pray 17 rakaats of faraz namaz , that is, 5 times namaaz.
i myself belong to gujarat and was ther at times of riots.
Differences
1) Bohras always wear a cap while praying namaaz, they wont wear any clothes for namaaz but only namaazi libaas ( special dress ) for namaaz unlike other muslims thts how they are different.
2) Bohras dont give zakaat by themselves to poor instead they give all of it to syedna his holiness.. and then he distribute it on their behalf.
3) Bohras are not allowed to take out meanings of holy quran as its not a job of ne human being but only his holiness Syedna can do it ...who in other words is learned and knows well wht bohras need to know out of quran. which he describes it in majlis to all followers by showing ways to live life as per holy quran and allah 's preachings.
4) bohras dont have different masjid but their dua's (prayers) are different frm other muslims sects. may be tht could be the reason why their mosque are considered different. but practically nothing is different.
There are many more differences in following religion but i can figure out just this much.
Now, as far as indian bohris are concerned. They hav to be friendly with non muslims because India is a secular nation not an Islamic nation. in order to live prosperous life.
And even after being Islamic nation, still people are fighting. Which can be seen in some places a continous fight is goin on between two major sects of muslim.
So wht else one can expect from a secular nation... so lets accept it ... fight will be there due to differences but bohras try to reduce those differences by being a part of Indian community rather thn being just a part of Muslim community.
One of my dear friend has got wrong interpretation of some article of newspapers.. Its just like considering all muslims to be violent and Osama bin laden after 9/11... u cant take one persons views and make him representative of whole bohra community... if u are doing so thn u r doing wrong. Whtever tht guy has said is completely wrong...tht must be his understanding.
Bohras are muslims first and then dawoodi bohris...
As long as, reply to wht article said in newspaper ..it has already been given in gujarat. but people dont understand the common principle wht this nonmulims follow...same wht british did...divide and rule...they just highlighted wht tht Mr X has said ...but they havnt mentioned newhere how much loss did bohra community has faced by lives and materialwise.
So dont consider only one side of story..if u really want to know the truth.
As long as statement of being peace loving community is concerned. It is again taken as wrong by people. It doesnt mean tht rest of sects of muslims are violent. but rather it means tht bohras are peace lovers. as they are a business community and businees needs harmony and peace to prosper. and even if u see records u will never find any bohras big names in any criminal activities...which itself explains everything. So dont interprete in wrong way.
