When push comes to shove, ‘Bohras are not Muslims’
It was reported in the English daily Indian Express and the Hindi daily Pratakal on 4 April 2002 that a group of Dawoodi Bohras in Gujarat claimed that they are "Not Hindus. No. Not Muslims either. They are Dawoodi Bohras caught in the crossfire.

“When the Maulana gives us any direction, we follow. When he asked us to return to business, we had to,” said Shabbir Moiz Vohra, who set up shop in Kawant a week ago.

Shabbir suffered losses to the tune of Rs 6 lakh when his three shops were looted and burnt but did not accept any compensation, saying he would “be better off without it.”

“We don’t fear anything after hearing from the Maulana. We don’t want to take revenge because we love peace,” said Aliajgar Jainnudin Vohra, who has reopened one of his three damaged shops.

Both of them clarify that they “are not Muslims, but are Dawoodi Bohras.” So does Nadir Badruddin Vohra. “We do break bread with them but marriages are taboo. They offer namaz five times a day, we do it only thrice; our mosques are also different,” he stressed.

These Bohras claim that “When the Maulana gives us any direction, we follow.” It is obvious that whatever they have said regarding their not being Muslims is as per dictates of Sayedna Saheb.

There is no corrective statement issued regarding this claim from Sayedna’s side either. So one will take it as official statement of Sayedna that Dawoodi Bohras are not Muslims.

In fact any one who follows the basic principles of Islam and believes in Allah, His book the Qura’n and His Prophet, Mohammed (PBUH) is a Muslim. Dawoodi Bohras are very much believers of these three essentials and are, therefore Muslims. They also believe in Walayat of Hazrat Ali and therefore they are a sub-sect of Shia Muslims. They combine Zohar and Isha prayers and again Asar and Magrib prayers and pray five times prayers in three times. But they do observe all five prayers. Their mosques are known as masjids and not by any other name like temple, church or synagogues. They believe in five pillars of Islam, Wehdat, Salat, Zakat, Haj and Jihad. So it is wrong to say that they are not Muslims.

Being a business community it is true that by and large the Bohra community is a peace-loving community. It is unfortunate that their present religious heads have adopted a life of luxury and in order to amass wealth they have imposed several un-Islamic taxes and practices on the followers. In order that their followers do not mix with other Muslims and know the true Islam they make systematic efforts to assert on the minds of the followers that they are quite different than other Muslims.

But the hypocrisy of their religious leaders becomes evident when they order their followers to close down their bank accounts saying that the interest is prohibited for Muslims. Or when the Bohra religious head take pride in being the Chancellor of Alighar Muslim University. Or his representative being on the Central Haj Committee and Muslim Personal Law Board. They make announcements of their being the real well-wishers of the Muslim world.

But when the time comes for them to be accountable under Islamic law or Muslim Waqf Act, or to save their skin in a situation like in Gujarat now, they feel no shame in claiming that they are not Muslims.

Furthermore, the Dawoodi Bohras statements, presumably under instruction from Sayedna Saheb, that they are peace-loving is most dangerous under the present circumstances. Which directly implies that the other Muslims are not peace loving and they are trouble-makers.

Violent attacks on reformist Bohras time and again by fanatic followers of Sayedna and their proud and arrogant behaviour with other Muslims, cursing the Muslim Khalifas and creating riots, are for any one to judge how peace-loving these followers of Bohra high priest are?

It is the duty of Sayedna to immediately refute the statements made by his followers that they are not Muslims.

We also insist on Muslim organizations like Muslim Personal Law Board, Haj Committee, Aligarh Muslim University etc. to seriously note this contention on behalf of Sayedna Muhammed Burhanuddin.

well bohras are a clever business community before the partition of india they were very much behind pakistan movement but after partition they have been more a less pro hindu community. infact they have also been anti muslim in many cases. they have often discriminated against muslims .but the recent riots in gujrat did not spare the bohras either they have been paying the hindu mobsters money and getting away most of the time but this time they were not spared
the bohras dont call themselves muslims and prefer calling themselves bohras instead

I have tons of Bohri friends in karachi. Heck one of my fav hangouts was bohri bazar!!! Theyre nice peace loving people, practices similar to Shias. The only major difference i noticed is they celebrate eid 2-3 days before the rest of the muslim population. Kher in pakistan they are considered muslim and they call themselves muslim too so theres nothing to worry about.

what do you know about the ground conditions in india? the hindu mob does not differentiate between a bohri and a sunni? for them every bearded man with a cap is a muslim. no matter how much the bohras tried to keep a seprate identity they will always be clubbed as muslims by the hindus no matter how much hindu chamcha giri they do. no matter how much hafta (pay off ) they ay to the hindu gangs they will not be spared. when the bohras are thrashed by the hindus they run to sunnis for protection. the same illetrate sunnis or musalamans as they call them.

I wud like to say something about this topic. Tho i m not a scholar neither i m complete follower. but i m just sayin as wht i knw abt it.
First of all, Bohris are muslims.... It is just a sect of muslim relligion.
They follow everything wht our beloved prophet has told. They recite holy quran and believe its aayaats...They are also believers of Prophets son in law and 4th kalifa Maula Ali and tht makes them Shias. They pray 17 rakaats of faraz namaz , that is, 5 times namaaz.
i myself belong to gujarat and was ther at times of riots.

Differences
1) Bohras always wear a cap while praying namaaz, they wont wear any clothes for namaaz but only namaazi libaas ( special dress ) for namaaz unlike other muslims thts how they are different.
2) Bohras dont give zakaat by themselves to poor instead they give all of it to syedna his holiness.. and then he distribute it on their behalf.
3) Bohras are not allowed to take out meanings of holy quran as its not a job of ne human being but only his holiness Syedna can do it ...who in other words is learned and knows well wht bohras need to know out of quran. which he describes it in majlis to all followers by showing ways to live life as per holy quran and allah 's preachings.
4) bohras dont have different masjid but their dua's (prayers) are different frm other muslims sects. may be tht could be the reason why their mosque are considered different. but practically nothing is different.

There are many more differences in following religion but i can figure out just this much.

Now, as far as indian bohris are concerned. They hav to be friendly with non muslims because India is a secular nation not an Islamic nation. in order to live prosperous life.
And even after being Islamic nation, still people are fighting. Which can be seen in some places a continous fight is goin on between two major sects of muslim.

So wht else one can expect from a secular nation... so lets accept it ... fight will be there due to differences but bohras try to reduce those differences by being a part of Indian community rather thn being just a part of Muslim community.
One of my dear friend has got wrong interpretation of some article of newspapers.. Its just like considering all muslims to be violent and Osama bin laden after 9/11... u cant take one persons views and make him representative of whole bohra community... if u are doing so thn u r doing wrong. Whtever tht guy has said is completely wrong...tht must be his understanding.

As long as, reply to wht article said in newspaper ..it has already been given in gujarat. but people dont understand the common principle wht this nonmulims follow...same wht british did...divide and rule...they just highlighted wht tht Mr X has said ...but they havnt mentioned newhere how much loss did bohra community has faced by lives and materialwise.

So dont consider only one side of story..if u really want to know the truth.

As long as statement of being peace loving community is concerned. It is again taken as wrong by people. It doesnt mean tht rest of sects of muslims are violent. but rather it means tht bohras are peace lovers. as they are a business community and businees needs harmony and peace to prosper. and even if u see records u will never find any bohras big names in any criminal activities...which itself explains everything. So dont interprete in wrong way.

hope this will change your thinking about bohras.

thrs no doubht that they have hold the basics pillars of islam very tighlty like namaz ,rooza, hajj but whn thr is a matter of zakat n kairat n fitrat they r not allowed to give it to any other thn to the heads of the communtiy .so that they can live luxurious life. i have seen one more thing ppl who r unble to give money they r treated in a most worst manner.n if any one wants to marry out side this community he/she had to fulfill a lot of na jaiz things to enter in thr community.i have been through all this things… that was a real bad exp for me .
one of my bohri frnd who is very close to me n always criticise bohra school of thought performed hajj this year.she told me that we were told by our mallahs only 5000 ppl r momin here whoes hajj is qabool by Allah n those r bohries.other thn no body hajj is qabool.she told me we have to take raza means permission by our higher athourities b4 perfrming each n every arkaan n each tawaaf n that raza is given whn u pay money to mallahs .only this year they did hajj wid muslim ummah other wise they performed hajj one day b4 whole muslim community.they r not allowed to read translation of quran.thr r many things which make u in a doubht that whether they r muslims r not.n yes they don call thm muslim rather vohra or bohra.n whn they talk abt non bohra they call thm muslims.

loads of bohra from USA,UK N INDIA r converting due to unjustice behaviour of thr heads.

Bohras are muslims , atleast for now. lets see how long before mullah calls them kafir and govt follows the suit.

A member wrote they are not muslim and another wrote they are muslim. Well honestly, how come anyone allow to change the prescribed timings of prayers as per their convenient? There are lots of questions but without knowing who actually they are, can't comments. Let see if esufalim can shere more details about them.

Maira reply is per base nahi karta k bohra are muslims or not but aik common sense jo app ka reply padh k zehan mai aata hai jis tarha aap tanqeed kar rahi hain mulims ko aur phir khud ko bhi mulims hi kehti hain.

Aap ne apni community ko all muslims se compare kardia. Even k khud app ki khud aik community hai islam mai. like shia, suni, deobandi etc, aap ki baton se is tarha lagta hai k aap ko isi tarha sikhaya gaya hai aur without research aap likh rahin hain. jaise k "ramadan ka chand to late nazar aata hy but Eid ka foran ajata hy" :)

woh theek hai aap syedna ko follow kartay hain takay aap ko deen ko follow karnay mai easy rahay. but yeh app ki need hai jo aap ki community ko behtar lagay. Islam mai yeh zarori nahi hai aur yeh bhi nahi k agar aap ne apna koi holy person banaya howa ho jo alive ho but once again yeh wrong bhi nahi hai aap bana saktay hain takay aap easily follow kar sakain. still Quaran,Hadees,Sunnat yeh sab already hain jo Hamaray Pyaray Nabi (SAW) ne describe kadia hai jo hamain follow karna chaiye. same isi tarha aap mai girls ki FMG(khatna) ki jati hai jo zarori nahi hai but its your own choice. aap yeh nahi keh saktin k jo muslim girls nahi karti who galat hai.

As far as central zakat system is tahra lagta hai k wealth community k andar hi circulate ho. Again its your choice as far as my concern mujhe zakat apnay hath se mustahiq ko dainay mai zyada khushi hogi jo mairi ankho k samnay hoga.
