I think people in North were a bit more shocked/frightened instantly, while it took some time for the folks in our town/class to realize what was going on. My wife (who is from NY) tells me that she was in school and as soon as it happened, they were sent home. When she arrived at her bus stop, her parents and other kids parents were there to receive them. Everyone was scared, confused, and just sad.

As for me, as Teggy said, I took it lightly at first (watched the news only for about 10 minutes and left for class) thinking some small plane got lost, crashed, BIG DEAL! But it was really terrible to see people jumping from the building and the buildings collapsing when I later saw the coverage on the news.
