What we learn about ourselves in Surah Fatihah

Peace All

Throughout the whole Qur’an we can take different angles to learn about certain subjects. A previous thread was about Surah Fatihah and how it teaches us about Allah (SWT). Now let’s take a look at how it teaches us about ourselves in relation to Allah (SWT).

AuzdubillahiminaSahaitaaniRajeem

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan

A) That we should seek refuge in Allah
B) That our relationship is with Allah one where He protects us.
C) That we acknowledge that Satan is accursed

BismillahiRahmaaniRaheem

(I begin) In the Name of Allah, The Merciful, The Beneficent

D) That we intend good attributing it to Allah
E) That we are at His Mercy
F) That we are the articles of His Benevolence.

AlhumdulillahiRabbil’Alameen, ArRahmaaniRaheem

All Praise is for Allah the Lord of the Universe.

G) That we should praise Allah with His Titles and contrast Him to His creation.

MalikiYawmiDeen

Owner of the Day of Reckoning

H) That we are on a journey to be given a reckoning … A judgement.

Therefore we conclude

I) Life is a test

EyyakaNabudu, wa EyyakaNastaeen

It is You alone we worship and it is You alone we ask for help

J) We should worship Him only
K) We should ask from Him only

In turn

L ) That the passing of life’s test is nested between Worship and supplication
M) That we must recognise that we are subservient to Him
N) and therefore that we NEED Him whether we realise it or not

Ihdinasiratalmustaqeem

Guide us to a Straight Path

O) That righteousness is straight
P) That being straight is difficult and we need to be Guided to it
Q) (from Arabic) this straightness is meant upwardly straight, so we are becoming high or close to Him by being Guided.

In turn
Straight means without hindrance and delay, but it also means difficult so we should be:

R) Prepared for difficulty when seeking guidance
S) Remove hindrances from our paths and the paths of others
T) Act quickly to do good

Siraatalladzeena,anamtalaihim

The path taken by those who You favoured

U) That there are different types of people
V) That we can learn from the lives of others to understand how to live ours

Ghairilmaghdubialayhim, waladaaleen

Not the (paths) taken by those who earned Your Wrath, and not those who went astray.

W) That there are extreme positions to be avoided
X) That we can learn from others to understand how NOT to live ours

In turn, since life is like a journey, then every journey requires movement and a direction.

Y) That to succeed we need both good direction and sincere effort lacking in either direction or effort will be failure.
