Thread moved, more appropriate for here :)

Re: what unis in london offer PHD in telecomm engineering/network engineering?

hey nadz, this thread is probably old news for you now but anyway.

PhD’s in science and engineering don’t work quite like that, they are in a specific area of research usually advertised by a very specific title, which is supposed to be what you will research into and will then the title of your thesis (although in most cases it changes).

So you will find PhD’s within the areas of Telecommunications/Network Engineering but they will vary greatly in terms of what the actual research is.

Also, typically PhD’s are only advertised by research groups when they can fund the post, meaning the fees will be paid by a funding body (such as EPSRC) or research grant and also will give the student a stipend. EPSRC funding is a tax free stipend of about £15,000 per annum for 3 years (fees are paid separately).

Currently for a single PhD post there are a huge number of applicants, way more than a few years ago and competition is really tough.

It’s relatively rare to self fund a PhD (in science/eng) because as I mentioned, positions are usually only advertised when there is funding available. In the cases of self-funding, it’s usually students from abroad because funding will usually only pay fees/stipend for UK/EU students. Foreign student fees are something like £20,000 per year. There are scholarships for foreign students though.

Anyway, if the person interested is classed as a UK student, it’s worth looking at EngD’s (engineering doctorates). They are offered jointly by a company and university research group so technically you are employed by the company as well and may well partly work in their offices. The stipend is more, in the region of £18-22K for 4 years.

To find advertised positions you can search http://www.jobs.ac.uk/ (most vacancies are advertised here) or you can go direct to departmental websites and they will have a section for PhD Vacancies i.e:
http://www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/CCSR/opp - they say they welcome enquiries from self funded students, so I’m sure there are more. But doing a PhD is stressful enough without worrying how you will finance it, so I wouldn’t recommend self funding.
