My Fiance’ to be is coming to propose in three weeks time…as you know i’m not indian so i’ve no idea what to expect and no idea what to wear
please give some ideas and i don’t want to look like a malay girl trying to be indian
Re: What to wear :(
where do you live? do you have access to an indian/pakistani clothing store? perhaps a lengha...
Re: What to wear :(
Scared, did you sort out that gift problem taht was worrying you earlier?
Why are you so worried about this? Your fiancé already knows that you are a Malay girl so he won't be judging you just because of the clothes that you are wearing. Only change your attire if you want to look extra special to him and for that any of the following will do if you'll be going to greet him at the airport or going out anywhere with him:
- Shalwar kameez (technically long shirts with trousers are being worn now).
- Sari (Casual one as girls in India mostly wear them)
- Long skirt with modest blouse/shirt with scarf.

If this was happening as per malay custom what would you wear?
I think perhaps stick with that for now and for later (the wedding etc) you can get his family to help you with what you can wear and how to go about it.
Also, is he coming alone or with his family?
Re: What to wear :(
^ agreed!
wear something that will make you feel good about yourself- if you've never worn indian clothes before, you might not be comfortable, and that would just add to your stress.
Re: What to wear :(
I would really like to know what a Malay girl would wear in these cirsumstances.
Re: What to wear :(
yes i did mahismart :)
i'm worried because i don't want to make any mistakes and really don't want to disappoint my husband to be.
If it was a malay engagement then i wouldn't even be seen at all
thanks everyone
Re: What to wear :(
^lol!
i think you should ask him what you should wear and how conservative the clothing needs to be or otherwise
what is your usual traditional dress? if it is what i think, it looks pretty and is covering so you can't really go wrong.
it was graduation time last week and one of the students who did his master's project in our group had his parents there (they are malaysian). his mum was dressed so elegantly - i loved it.
i'm sure you won't make any mistakes :)
Re: What to wear :(
Oh ok!
Do you want recommendations for an engagement outfit or just clothes in general?
Also, please don't think that you are going to make mistakes just because you are unaware of South Indian attire.
Re: What to wear :(
Hi Mahismart thanks for the advice and yes i;d like recommendations for an engagement outfit too. I spoke to my Fiance to be and he said it doesn't matter what i wear... so now i just wanna look drop dead gorgeous and more importantly i wanna feel comfortable
As long as its not blue... I like pink but i actually want to wear green - olive green to be exact...Thanks Mahismart you are a lifesaver
Re: What to wear :(
I still don't get what you are looking for? Do you want to wear Pakistan clothes then?
Because at the end of the day, which the short time you have you'll have to buy something from your local area... whatever is available.
A sari will be very difficult unless you have a friend that can help you drape it properly.
Here are two examples of engagement or nikkah outfits:
But these are for parties. If it’s just gonna be your family and his and just a proposal, I would keep it simple.
Re: What to wear ![]()
For the engagement party, you have the following options. Please remember that you should pick an outfit that you feel you are comfortable with. The actual day is not for experimentation, so try on a few options before actually deciding what to wear.
- Option A - Saree – drape in contemporary and fashionable styling.
- Option B - English Evening Gown or a Malay engagement dress.
- Option C - Long shirt with trousers.
- Option D - Peshwaas
- Option E - Light lehnga (Choose this if you are having a biggish party with more than 150 ppl).
Other things to consider:
- Henna/Mehendi on your hands and feet.
- Jewelry – necklace, bangles, anklets, finger rings, earrings, pendant complementing the outfit.
- Shoes – with small heel, decorated beads, stones or colorful straps.
- Flower garlands esp. of roses.
- Light makeup.
- Elegant party hair styling.
If you think that you still can’t handle the pressure or need more info, hire a planner who is well versed with Malay Indian weddings/engagements. I found these but I have no idea about your exact location:

Re: What to wear :(
My most favourite engagement dress is the one 'stoppit' posted in an earlier post. I loved her minimalistic and contemporary look.
