What to serve parents at a children's Birthday party?

So little one is turning 4 InshAllah in November and bless her she has friends she wants to have at her party (as well as her ‘aunts’ and family too).

I have the kids menu pretty much in the bag-my question is what (if anything) should I serve the parents (who will be staying with the children during the party).

I will have both desi/non-desi parents at the party.

I was thinking of a cocoa bar for the parents. Mum has suggested pakoras for the adults and maybe samosas?

Would a chaat/paan puri bar be more suitable and cost effective?!

Or should I have a proper meal for the adults?! I have no idea which way to go with this. I don’t want to be seen as a bad host!

Advice please!

Depends upon the time of the party. Most kids party’s are around 4pm time slot. That means after lunch. It would be to early to serve a full fledged meal at that time

Re: What to serve parents at a children’s Birthday party?

i just had a bday party two days ago for my 3 yo at home. Had both kids n adults … desi n non desi.
I went for a full on desi meal for the grown ups AND kids (with a bit of trepidation) … vegi samosas, biryani, qorma, naan, tandoori chicken, salad, raita, cut up fruit, juices, iced tea, sodas, minted water etc… all moderately spiced.
it went over very well with both the adults n kids… had v little left over.

my plan was to grab pizza for kids if i saw them not eating … but it really wasnt needed.

Re: What to serve parents at a children’s Birthday party?

What is your kids’ menu?

I like samosay better than pakoray. So, samosay and a chaat station sounds good and sufficient.

If you want to make dinner for parents, then you can do a pasta dish (baked or otherwise) with bread and a nice salad. These are items that even Desi parents (as well as non-Desi) tend to enjoy, so I personally don’t think it’s necessary to make Desi dishes not that I have anything against them. I’m just thinking of a menu that will be heart/filling, easy for you to prepare, and that will appeal to both Desi and non-Desi parents. You can even do two different types of pasta dishes for adults or just one hearty dish like a lasagna.

So, let’s say that you want to include dinner for the parents, the chaat station is a perfect appetizer for both groups of parents and it’s a Desi item. That can lead into a dinner with a pasta dish, bread and salad…so you don’t have to worry about making biryani and then figuring out what curry-based dish to pair with the biryani and how spicy it should be for non-Desi guests, etc etc. But if you want to make a full-fledged Desi meal, that’s fine too.

Yeah, if its tea time , serve some snacks , like pizza’s , samosa’s , Patties, lasagna may be , pasta , chicken tikka’s, cheese cake , fruit salad etc .. Dont have to put everything that I mentioned , pick and choose what suits you.

Its usually easiest to go for a BBQ at parties like these. Its easier to manage with so many people around.

My friend recently did a party for her twins and I liked her idea a lot. She had marinated various kinds of meat and kept it all neatly on a table along with condiments and salads and buns. Her husband was responsible to ensure the coal was kept hot in the BBQ station. The guests could pick up the meat sticks and do their own BBQ of the two stations available. People really enjoyed it to the tee ..

Re: What to serve parents at a children’s Birthday party?

Okay right. The party will start at 1:30PM. It’s at a community centre so BBQ etc isn’t an option. Plus it’s in November.

The kids menu is Frozen themed. So a bit of a mix.

Was on chacha google and came across the idea of Indian Street Food stall. Maybe I could scale it down for the adults?

Re: What to serve parents at a children’s Birthday party?

Its lunchtime party so yes it makes sense to have something like a food street .. People will expect some proper food rather then snacks. Samosa’s etc wont be suitable for that time.

Re: What to serve parents at a children’s Birthday party?

do a pasta or pasta bake that appeals to non desis and have nan haleem or nan qorma for the desi parents or a biryani dish. I am sure you are serving other stuff too, focus on the kids.

Re: What to serve parents at a children’s Birthday party?

Sounds great but a lot of work?

What do you guys think of this:

bun kebab

masala fries

chaat with various toppings

batata vadas?

Possibly samosas

Drink: mocktail of some sort. Was thinking lassi at first.

I have those buffet pans that keep food warm an felt the above would be a nice mix.

Re: What to serve parents at a children’s Birthday party?

It’s a great menu for tea but not sure if it will go down well with desi adults at lunch time or cater to the taste buds of non desis enough to make a meal out of it. Others who have had such gatherings will be able to guide better.
