Umbrella is a good idea, especially during walks from mina tent to jamraat to throw stones at shaitaan, as Sun is really hot.

Ask him to pack very minimum, if his boarding and lodging is part of the package. His unlocked cell phone, a tablet (iPad etc) with front camera to Skype with you, some basic over the counter medicine, and very few clothes (maybe three shalwar qameez), underwear, ear plugs, umbrella, couple of pairs of Hawaii chappal, some dry fruits and snack bars.

Yes every one needs to have a cloth or plastic bag to carry your shoes/slippers in the Haram Shareef, one cannot leave shoes at the door because you may not come back the way you entered! and also a folding mat to sit on, the floors are hard most places in the courtyards, of-course insides are carpeted! and the day one spends at Arafat is out in the open, one can get tired standing all afternoon!

He also will need little peace of mind before he sets off on the journey. If you can find a pack of it for him in the market then plz buy one.
