Re: What to do at work lunches?
I still don't get why one can't be forthright about the pork issue. It's against your belief system. I think at least in US, they would absolutely respect that. Especially in the workplace, where any form of discrimination is a no no.
Pork is not something that one cannot avoid here...its just as easy to a non-pork eater as it is to be a vegetarian.

Want to be sure I understand - it is just as easy to be someone who does not eat pork as it is to be a vegetarian, correct?
In other words, if a vegetarian can manage to join colleagues, so can someone who does not eat pork.
But if it is a religion based discomfort with going to a non halal restaurant, the requirements may he more stringent is what I gathered from earlier posts. For example, my mother does not go to any restaurant that serves non veg. More of a religious restriction for her. Looks like similar constraints may apply to some who are devout muslims and don't want to risk contamination.
I think in your earlier post, you had provided some workarounds. If such workarounds are not available, don't you think it is ok to say I will be happy to join you folks if we go to a halal restaurant?
Re: What to do at work lunches?
^ It absolutely is.
This is entirely up to her though. If I was very strict about it, I'd do what my mom does...ask if its possible to cook her food in a separate pot/pan/etc. Lots of people do that for other reasons.
Re: What to do at work lunches?
I will most likely request that the restaurant cook my food using separate pans, utensils etc in the event that it's essential for me to attend such a lunch.
I know a lot of people aren't as fussed as I am but I certainly wouldn't consider it as being "OCD" as stated by some poster here. That just doesn't make sense. But I do thank those that were able to provide constructive and clear suggestions which are all helpful.
Re: What to do at work lunches?
If you fail to not even care about eating haraam food then I don’t even expect you to understand the question. But do refrain from labelling someone else as “OCD” when they are simply following their religion. And FYI both my parents were also born and raised in western countries but this is the mindset with which we were brought up with. It is often those that come abroad later who feel the need to be “modern” and eat everything and anything in an attempt to fit in. No such thing here.

I don't always stick to haram but I understand the question..
Not sticking to haram isn't necesarily about trying to be 'modern' and wanting to fit in.. That poster was wrong to label but it's also wrong of you to make a comment like that (isn't that the same thing?).. Surely it's not that hard to believe that some just love their burgers or chicken too much lol and as someone who grew up on an environment where there were no halal shops at all and very few Muslims it's a habit I've also never broken..
If you want people to respect your choice to only eat halal you should respect others and their choices as well..

I agree with you. But this thread was never about questioning my decision to stick to halal, it was about how to handle a specific situation. I find it offensive that this poster had the audacity to label my choices as being "OCD" when I never asked for an opinion about my choices.
Re: What to do at work lunches?
Wow…some people are definitely narrow minded and quick to judge others and preach their holier than thou attitude. :halo:
FYI, there are many different view points in Islam on halal/haram meat and those that choose to eat non-zabihah meat are not trying to be “modern” and “fit in” but they simply follow a different school of thought, which some narrow minded people fail to realize because religion is black and white to them. May be you should do some research before accusing others of not practicing Islam and being self righteous yourself.
.
No one is judging you for eating halal only but if the strip of bacon in the plate from the person across from you bothers you so much, I think there’s some issues.
Re: What to do at work lunches?
Is it really so difficult for you to stick to the question? Perhaps I need to word my original question in a more simple manner to enable you to understand it and thus be able to respond properly without going off track? You failed to stick to the point of the thread and rather (for some reason- perhaps too much free time?) felt the need to go of on a tangent about being “OCD.”
Mods, please lock this thread. I don’t have time to waste on people who are incapable of understanding a simple question which has been posted.
