What to buy for a newborn baby?

I went to check out baby stuff for the first time today…n OMG! doesnt seem like an easy task! :mudhosh:

Alishaht it really isnt an easy job! Now im looking at breast pumps, bottles and sterilizing equipment. Everything that we need, i m reading tons and tons of reviews on it cuz i want the best and suitable product for my bubz inshallah.

Re: What to buy for a newborn baby?

mummies to be if you're going to be breast feeding, don't forget the breast pads..a must for your hospital bag

Re: What to buy for a newborn baby?

another idea would be to ask your close family to buy things like the cot, rocker/bouncer, moses basket and pushchair etc..you would rather they buy you things that you will need than stuff that will end up in your attic

i'd also recommend getting some disposable burp cloths & bibs. the babiesrus/toysrus brand is relatively inexpensive.

Re: What to buy for a newborn baby?

this weekend I was at BabyOne and bought some stuff! Got an Espirit Car set set this time, last time I had a MaxiCosi. Some garment set, some bibs and small socks :)

this was the first round of shopping for my little one and it was as exciting as the first time :)

Re: What to buy for a newborn baby?

Wow awesome Saadiab. I am still holding off on any shopping until the 7th or 8th month.
I still have Graco car seat/stroller travel system from my son, so I will be using that. I plan to move my son to big boy bed (spiderman or such) and then baby can use the crib...but most likely in beginning I will use some sort of bassinett. Hmm. Did you find out what you are having? I did try to find out but did not get a clear answer, so want to wait until I get a better result, as position of baby was weird so they couldnt really tell.

Target also carries lots of great products that are cheaper than Babies R Us. The disposable changing clothes are awesome.

Re: What to buy for a newborn baby?

Well Afro-sheen, I found out the gender it was quite clean in the scan, so I know what to buy.

Re: What to buy for a newborn baby?

Sweet. I think I will have to wait for another scan. The baby refused to let us see what it is. It had its back turned to the ultrasound machine thing...hehe. So either I buy neutral stuff or I wait a little longer.

Here is a list that might help!!! Its rather long and you might not need all the stuff!! I have only bought 4 things from it so far - better get going!

Nursery and Play

• Cot
• Cot mattress
• Mobile - optional
• Changing mat and cheap towels to keep bottoms warm!
• Chest of drawers
• Chair for night time feeds – I always did these in bed so no need for a chair
• Dimmer switch – again not necessary – you can always get a nightlight instead
• Curtains with blackout lining or Blackout blind
• Baby monitor – Tommy Tippee do good one
• Bouncy chair – best I’ve come across is the baby bjorn one
• Room thermometer – grobag egg is great as it changes colour with temp so you can see at a glance if the room is too warm or cold
• Basket to store toiletries and bits in on top of chest of drawers – can be handy for moving round the house
• Grobags .They do newborn ones now…ideally need two, one on and one in the wash (if an accident happens and ones in the wash… use a hairdryer!!)
• Moses basket and bedding and 4 flat sheets and a couple of top sheets and blankets
• Couple of toys!

On the Move

• Pram – personal choice (I have a mamas & papas pliko p3 travel system, and a phil & teds 3 wheeler with 2 seats)
• Sun parasol
• Raincover (A MUST!)
• Pram blanket a cotton cellular one and a fleece one
• Car seat (if not getting a travel system)
• Sunscreens for car, we have 4!
• ‘Baby on Board’ sign
• Baby carrier Make sure it has a good back support bit for you…I never used this (baby bjorn do a good one)
• Changing bag (have it permanently ready to go!)
• Waterproof coat for you!!!

Feeding

• Breast pads (Johnson and Johnson, softest/most comfy!
• Steriliser (look at places like Boots if you have a boots card and are buying loads of baby stuff you’ll build up lots of points and can use them to buy something like your sterilizer)
• Bottle brush (came free with sterliser!)
• Bottle and teats (don’t bother with the small size, only last a couple of weeks!) We use Avent bottles and teats…would recommend 8 if bottle feeding (but get a couple even if planning to BF…just in case, will also need them if you express!)
• Breast pump (don’t get till BF is established!)
• Formula (have a couple of ready made cartons in just in case!!)
• Muslins (have about 16, use all the time! Boots ones are good, but mothercare are grand too)
• Bibs (if bottle feeding) (Try and get plastic backed ones (so milk doesn’t soak through to their clothes! Try Dunnes or Mothercare!)
• Infacol drops (for bringing up wind, they’re fine from birth and can be very useful)

Bathing and Changing

• Aqueous cream or Silcocks base – really great on new skin and can use in the bath too
• Baby wipes (be wary of buying too many buy one get one free packs though…in case of allergies, I find pampers sensitive the best)
• Baby shampoo (started using when she was about 8 weeks and use once a week)
• Johnson and Johnson Calming body wash, smells LOVELY!!!
• Cotton wool pads
• Sudocream
• Nappies (Pampers are best but don’t get too many though, need to find the best brand for your baby!)
• Nappy sacks
• Nail clippers/scissors although supposed to bite their nails, have never managed to do this with either of mine, they’re too tiny!
• Bath thermometer (Boots) or just use your elbow and common sense
• Bath sponge
• Wash cloth
• Bath support – very hand as can keep your hands free
• Baby bath – mothercare do a great one that straddles the bath so you’re not breaking your back
Brush and comb
• Bath towels (We got quite a few hooded ones as presents, so don’t buy many till after baby is born if you need them)

Clothing

• Vest Bodysuits (we got 4 ‘up to one month’ from M&S which were never used as our babies are whoppers – 9lbs 8oz and 10lbs 2oz, so will only get 0-3 months this time – pack of 7 from Dunnes, Mothercare or M&S) Can always get more if you need them!
• Sleepsuits (pack of 7)
• Cardigan – my mum knitted a couple
• Socks (3 pairs)
• Scratch mitts (only get a couple of pairs though)
• Shawl/blanket
• Coat/snowsuit for trips out/going home – depends on when you’re due

Hospital Bag

• T-shirt/nightie for labour (€4 penneys – you’ll be binning it believe me)
• Slippers (€6 penneys – my waters broke on my slippers first time and second time I was sick on them!!)
• Socks (feet can get cold in labour apparently (Mine didn’t!))
• Lightweight dressing gown
• Evian face spray (Lots of people say they love this – I never got a chance to use it)
• Arnica 200 (Boots) supposed to help bruising/swelling afterwards definitely worth getting
• Dextro energy tablets (Tesco)
• Boiled sweets – Gas and air can taste funny, also the midwives seem to like being given sweets!!
• CDs – Although I never get a chance for this kinda stuff as the longest I’ve been in a delivery room is 57 minutes – I have very fast births!!

1st night onwards…

• Disposable pants (Buy em large and then bin em!! I had about 5 pairs and only used them for the first night…)
• Big knickers (5 pairs in a pack from M&S much nicer than paper ones, plus you can wear them at home after when hubbie is getting randy, really gives them the message to STAY AWAY!!!!)
• Maternity sanitary pads (Most chemists, I used two packs, although keep an extra spare pack at home that he can bring in just in case! I had to get more brought in last time and my husband brought in cotton wool – very useful!!)
• Sanitary bags
• Always Ultra Allnight Sanitary towels, make you feel more human and not quite so ‘mattress like’!!
• Breast pads (Johnson and Johnson) (again have a spare box at home!)
• Nursing bras (Elle MacPherson maternelle are great)
• Front opening nightie (if breast-feeding), I use pj’s though as a bit more dignified if people are visiting
• Toiletries (Tip, use two in one shampoo (much quicker) and roll on deodorant if BF!!)
• Tissues
• Vaseline for dry lips
• Earth Mama Angel Baby – New Mama Bottom Spray (cannot recommend this highly enough. You’ll probably need to get it online. After the birth if you've had stitches you spray it on whenever you go to the loo (or whenever you like) and it soothes the area.)
• Tea Tree oil & empty 50cl water bottle - fill with luke warm water whenever you go to the loo and drop in a couple of drops of the tea tree oil then pour over your "bits" as you pee or just after.
• Lansinoh Lanollin cream for sore nipples – put on after each feed don’t wait for nipples to get sore!
• DARK towels (you will BIN them as soon as possible! Trust me!!)(I used one hand towel and 1 bath towel
• Comfy clothes to go home in (remember your feet might swell so don’t expect to be back in your pre-preggers clothes, I always bring in something from early pregnancy for comfort)
• Make up!!!!
• Money for phone card, newspaper etc….
• Magazine to flick through when you spend the entire night awake listening to other babies cry whilst yours sleeps!!!
• Phone charger

For baby

• Towel
• Nappies (I took a pack of 28 – plenty but have a spare pack at home!)
• Cotton wool – hospitals frown on wet-wipes
• Vaseline for little bottom after each change
• Couple of muslin clothes for spit-up
• Baby soap (didn’t use it!)
• 5x vest bodysuits
• 5x sleepsuits
• hat
• scratch mitts
• blanket/shawl
• Teddy bear!
• Have going home outfit (probably just another babygro, and coat ready for hubbie to bring in)

CAMERA!!!!

A good tip is to pack several bags – a small one for labour with nightie, slippers, dressing gown, 1 babygro, vest and nappy, cds, sweets, face spray. A bag for the ward then with stuff for you and baby, then one to leave at home for hubbie to bring in with going home clothes for you and baby and blanket. Leave anything that you might need brought in to you (i.e. extra nappies, babygros etc. in a place that hubbie will easily find.) Also make sure he’s had a practice at putting the car seat in and out of the car so he can do it when you’re going home

Re: What to buy for a newborn baby?

I think you could probably emit half the things on this list......but OH MY GOD it is still a long list. i wonder if i could pay someone to get all the stuff. heh

Yes it is a long list and you prob dont even need alot of the things but its still very helpful. Found it on the babycentre website - so thought i would post it on GS as a reference!

Re: What to buy for a newborn baby?

Find out what you will get at the hospital. During our childbirth classes they told us they give you huge pads for postpartum bleeding, disposable panties (they were cloth like and were very comfy), hair dryer, towels, good pillows, dermoplast for down there before you go to the loo etc. All i needed was toothbrush/paste, makeup, slippers and a change of clothes. Lol never got the chance to read any magazines or anything. Dont forget your phone charger or camera though.

Re: What to buy for a newborn baby?

Wow!! This thread is soo informative. What brands would you all recommend for baby gear? Most of the ppl tell me to get the Graco travel system, and a pack n play, and the fisherprice (rainforest is just so popular) bouncer.

So yeah, what brands mommies? Also, I'm talking about regular walmart/ Sears/ babies R us type brands. No funky celebrity stuff.. :)
