What the heck!

dude seriously what is up with bandwidth limits? someone help explain this to me.

recently my ISP started charging us for bandwidth. first way pay for DSL, and then we also pay for any extra bandwidth we go over. This is totally a new thing btw. Now we have 3 computers in the home. how are you NOT going to go over the bandwidth limit? :frusty:

so my dad called them up, and this is what they said increases bandwidth:

  • online games - ok no tetris? no bejewelled for me? for the love of God what am i supposed to do without these :crying:
  • youtube. youtube?!?!?! how in the world does the dramatic hamster increase bandwidth?
  • picture upload/download and/or big email attachments - ok so like what? i can’t share pictures anymore? i can’t upload them on my chehra kitaab? i can’t look at RKS? i can’t upload pictures to walmart’s photolab to get them printed? and max email attachments are 20 mb!!! :smack:

so yeah. i looked up this other DSL provider and they have a bandwidth limit too :pcg:

unfair.

Re: What the heck!

wat is bandwidth anyways :konfused:

Re: What the heck!

Most ISP providers have a bandwidth limit, for what i pay, my limit is 40GB a month, if i exceed that i have to pay additional for every MB above the allocated 40GB i have agreed to.

does this qualify me as a tech nerd?

Re: What the heck!

i don’t know the definition, but it has something to do with like downloading stuff

i should ask our ISP what our limit is :hmmm:

but why the limit :crying: what’s the point of DSL if you can’t waste time on the internet

and nyahh…it doesn’t. i know that stuff and i’m just an average user

Re: What the heck!

That is soooooooooooooooooooooooooo weeeirrrddd!

I’ve never heard of anyone being charged that :hmmm:

Until Now…

Re: What the heck!

yeah apparently it’s to prevent piracy

BS! it’s just an excuse to make more money

Re: What the heck!

...caz the world wide wide web would be clogged up.

Re: What the heck!

then hire a stupid plumber, but don’t limit my surfing :pcg:

Re: What the heck!

but as you said, you're an average user. :D

...so vaaaat's ya praaaablem?

Re: What the heck!

^lol

ISP have recently started to do that because some people are bandwidth hungry (P2P Sharing, Torrents, etc..etc..) so Bandwidth limits and/or Throttling makes it almost impossible to share huge number of files.

I have DSL, i can’t even recall how many times i must’ve downloaded files well over 5-6-7 even 8GB. I don’t recall being over-charged.

:hmmm: something to ponder over…maybe i’ll call my provider and find out more

Re: What the heck!

how much you pay a month for the service?

Re: What the heck!

29.99 3MBPS down/ 386K-512K UP

Re: What the heck!

$30 a month huh!, what's your usage limit?

Re: What the heck!

I don't know...that's why i'm wondering if i even have a limit (from ISP)

Personal usage and habits, are pretty heavy. plenty of D/L and U/L.

Re: What the heck!

hmmm, in that case you may not have a limit, if your are a heavy user.

Re: What the heck!

wait…so…ur habits define ur bandwidth limit?

or are u saying that because i use it that much and am able to thus far…i dnt have a limit, cuz if i did i would’ve beat Khumar to this thread?

lol

Re: What the heck!

…in short, your ISP wants your business; thus they may already be aware that your a heavy user and are being good samaritans by keeping you happy. :halo:

Re: What the heck!

Even if ya are allowed Unlimited downloads . Ideal for downloading movies, video clips, music and enjoying online gaming. There is a thing called Fair usage policy :D

Re: What the heck!

Absolutely! The only difference now is that they’ve started to force it by means of limitations. Because they don’t want some to have more than their fair share of the d/l while other mild users suffer due to the bottleneck situation.

I’m pretty fair though…i upload as much as i download :whistling:

Re: What the heck!

uhhh what? :aq:

i used to dload huge files :teary2:

i used a lot of bandwidth  torrents were my fav. then came the streaming. so why aren’t they happy with my business :pcg:
