Bangladesh's upset win over England has raised their chances of qualifying for the quarter-finals. However, England can also make it if they win their match against West Indies
Both Bangladesh and Ireland had a terrific chance to cause an upset today and create a chance for themselves to qualify for the quarter-final stage. Ultimately though, it was only Bangladesh who managed to scrape through with a two-wicket win over England. This win opens up quite a few possibilities in Group B which always seemed to be the tougher of the two groups. Here is a look at the possible scenarios and what teams must do to ensure qualification for the quarter-finals. England
England have no choice but to win their remaining game against West Indies to guarantee a place in the next round. With five points from five games (two wins, one tie and two losses), they have to firstly win their game against West Indies and hope that Bangladesh don’t win both their remaining games against South Africa and Netherlands. Bangladesh
Bangladesh have given themselves a good chance to make it to the next round. However, with a very low net run-rate, they must try to beat both South Africa and Netherlands to guarantee progress. In the event of one win, they must hope that England lose to West Indies as they will struggle to surpass West Indies’ run-rate in the event the teams are tied on points. West Indies
West Indies have an excellent net run-rate after their massive wins against Bangladesh and Netherlands. There is only a small chance that they may miss out on qualification. This can happen if they lose both their games to England and India and if Bangladesh go on to win both their matches. However, if Bangladesh win only one of their matches, it is unlikely that their run rate will match that of West Indies.
^^ England vs. WI. WI will try their best to win against England since they know India is on a high and in good form.
England will be under extra pressure to defeat Windies....
WI have a couple of massive hitters + a good bowling attack...so it will not be easy for England to defeat WI...especially when England are suffering from bowling line due to the absence of Stuart Broad...
BD might try to choke SA...if well planned... :D and outclass the Netherlands...
PS: So this 'group of death'' will see more blood and sweat... :D
The Drama in Group A is self inflicted by Pakistan. (sorry couldn't resist saying that)
Also,
If Pakistan loose to Australia and only able to get 1 more win...then I wonder if they will be no 3 or 2 in the pool and hence play the same grade from Pool B. So most likely I think they will end up playing WI or India in the QF.....
My predictions - based on the result of Pak - Aus game on March 19 as this game can either make Pakistan number 1 in Group A or number 4
If Pakistan will lose to Australia then the chances are that they will end up number 4 in their group. In that case they will play South Africa in the last quarter final in Colombo on March 26. the remaining quarter finals will be
March 23: 1st Quarter - Australia vs Bangla
March 24: 2nd Quarter - Srilanka vs Windies
March 25: 3rd Quarter - NZ vs India
On the other hand if Pakistan wins the game against Australia, InshaAllah, the quarterfinals will be:
March 23: 1st Quarter - Pakistan vs Bangla in Mirpur
March 24: 2nd Quarter- Srilanka vs Windies
March 25: 3rd Quarter - Aus vs India
March 26: 4th Quarter - NZ vs South Africa
Bangladesh and Ireland shouldn't be a problem for them you'd think.
It does, however, throw a spanner in the works for a potential IND v Pak match up in the quarters. More than likely Pakistan must come 2nd to avoid India.
