Whatever u wear in uk. The locals also wear that kinda stuff cuz their own national clothing is kinda impractical and outdated…Those thobes… For ladiesi mean. They still wear it but at home… If at all.
I doubt ure wardrobe will need to be replaced …

I was planning on buying 3-4 abayas/thobes to wear outside…(just the abayas, no headscarf). Will it be modest enough for their standards?
Here in UK, I always wear a cardi or something if I’m wearing a short top or body hugging dress…guess can’t do that in Doha. It’s too hot there.

Khawa is right about you not having to replace your wardrobe. Whatever is considered decent in the UK will work in the UAE too. Qatar is slightly more conservative but they don’t force any dress code on you either.
About the locals: Majority of them still wears the traditional black Abaya (mostly with ornaments on it) but will wear Western clothes (jeans, etc.) underneath. As for the men, most of them still wear the national dress even in business environments. There are some locals who have switched to pent/shirt but that is definitely not a majority.
Interestingly enough if a foreigner wears the local male dress outside his home, it is frowned upon in the UAE and in Qatar.

I don’t think my husband will be wearing the Qatari national dress…he has few Moroccan robes…guess he won’t be frowned upon for those?
And don’t the women feel hot with layers of clothing? (jeans and abaya)
Will I be frowned upon for wearing abaya (black or colourful)? I don’t look Qatari and I don’t look foreigner (if you mean white) either.

You can buy them if you want to, but it won’t be a necessity in Qatar. You will need them when you visit Saudi Arabia though.
That would work in Qatar too. You will hardly ever be exposed to the heat anyway, because in the hot months you spend 95% of your time in air-conditioned environements.

That should be ok, I guess. I don’t really know how Moroccan robes look like.
No they don’t because they hardly ever spend any time outdoors (except for the winter months).
Colourful abayas? You hardly ever see those. They’re almost always black, but do have ornamental stones on them. And yes you can wear them there. A lot of ladies (locals and foreigners) do so due to religious reasons.

U can wear nything as long asits not slutty.. It all goes… And no one will frown atu for wearing an abaya.. They will actually respect u more 
Umer… I didnt know they dont like men wearing the national dress…foreign men that is…
My dad only wears dress thobes when he goes out and night thobes for home wear and no one has said anything to him… And he lives in arabia of all places … Maybe it was a one time incident?

That’s why I specifically said: It is frowned upon in the UAE and Qatar. Saudi Arabia is very different to the rest of the Gulf countries.

Noi know that… I just thought saudis being more racist than other arabs.. Ud think the qataris would be nice and not look down on a foreigner wearing their garb.

I think you are right about Saudis being more racist than others. I don’t think that them not liking others to wear their garb has anything to do with looking down on others. It is just not considered appropriate.

my absolutely favourite one was tailor-made to my taste and design in Muscat and even though it’s almost a decade old it is still my favourite one!

wish I had a pic in it…all the ones that I can remember are from a distance and don’t really show off the design at all.

In UAE everything works for shots to desi to abaya not to worry even in Qatar things are very modern even UK clothing can work mostly locals wear abayas
