What should Sue do?

My friend Sue is a counter manager for the makeup line. She has 6 girls working under her. Sue accepted this job six months ago. Before she had the same title with a same line but other location. This counter is bigger and money is much more. Well, when Sue joined this counter it was a mess and numbers were very down. Girls are working there for long time and very comfortable and friends with each other including head managers. Work wise they are very slow and nothing was getting done by the book. Previous counter manager was easy going and cared about her relationship with other girls. That’s why she never did any thing professionally. She was a good friend with all girls and girls loved her a lot. (I guess that was the reason for no sales for the counter).

Sue has a record of bringing sales up and does her job beyond head manager’s expectations. But also she likes to follow the book. Well, long story short… counter was a mess, when Sue laid down the rules no one liked her, when schedule is made girls always change that with out her permission. Head manager is somewhat like previous counter manager and very easy going with those girls (because they have been working with each other form past nine years).

Head manager and girls work directly for the department store, but Sue is a counter manager for her make up line that’s why she is working directly with the makeup line and department store. Sue cannot tolerate sales to go down that’s why she uses different tactics to keep the sales growing.

Well, this is not getting any shorter… lol)

Some girls are very spoiled and have guts to ignore or refuse to follow whatever Sue plans or asks them to do. Matter goes to the department manager and since she has same mentality as other girls, she asks Sue to chill and in the result sales get effected. Bla… Bla … Bla… so many issues. Girls don’t show up to work, call sick all the time and other things. Which makes Sue (inside) very mad and she feels very insulted depress. No support form managers.

Sue is a very kind, friendly, helpful girl. One thing she does wrong is that trusts everyone. And tells things openly to girls. (Whatever is in her heart she tells them nicely – on politics – in fact she HATES politics)

The recent issue is that, there is a new girl started under her and Sue trained her keeping in mind that at least this new girl has to learn things the right way. Sue also informs this plan to other girls. (One thing about Sue is that she likes to work as a team and prefers to involve the team members in her plan). (Man this is keep going and going, I thought it would be short)

Well, one day when Sue is off and Vicki (the new girl) and Linda (one old worker) opened the counter and did nothing. Even though Sue wrote down the tasks. When Sue went back the next day Linda was off and Vicki was working. Sue asked the reason ‘why things were not done?’ In her reply Vicki said that Linda said that we don’t do anything in the morning just walk around the counter and if the customer comes just assist them. Sue was not happy because these old workers are now making new girl the same as them and not helping Sue to progress in sales. (The sales pressure is always there form the makeup line).

Later in a week, when sue wrote down the task for the same girls, she also wrote something like…”if you don’t do it you might as well go home”(Keep in mind that due to same background Sue is little bit close to Linda and they do joke around with each other). Any person in the right mind would take that sentence as a caution and try to do her job, but that stupid girl Linda photo copied that task note and gave the copies to all head mangers and store manager (Sue had a day off). Next day when Sue showed up for work, her head manger called her in the office and told her that “if she wasn’t good at her work and brought the counter to the good level she would have been fired and pulled her head manager along with her”. This (photo copy) matter went also to the head manager and he is questioning that he doesn’t want any counter in his store to be run in HITLER rules.

Sue was now very upset and asked Linda ‘why did she do that?’ in her defence Linda told Sue that Vicki and her didn’t know what else to do. In a result Sue told her that Linda has treated her with disrespect, back stabbed her and broke her trust.

Later Linda went to the head manager crying and told this to her. Head manager gave Sue another lecture.

Now Sue is very depress and hurt. Don’t have any idea what to do. These girls are very immature and don’t take their work seriously. In a result sales go down and department head managers don’t seems to give any concern about it. Makeup line is putting pressure on Sue.

What should Sue do?

Re: What should Sue do?

Sue should read this post and fall asleep. It’ll solve her problems for a little while :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: What should Sue do?

Sue should commit suicide.

Sometimes it's hard when the whole organization needs a change. People resist change, especially when it require more committment from them. As you said, girls are friends with the manager and manager is laid back as well. Sue has no support from her top officials. She can keep trying and she may succeed, but she will be the "bad guy". However, things would be different if she had her upper management's support. She can keep trying, if she thinks she can't change much here, she should put her energy somewhere where she can get results.

Re: What should Sue do?

SUe should be the best watever she is, i.e., conform to the group mentality, for a month, let everyone trust her and love her, blah blah blah. Then she ought to quit and work for a bigger, better company and let those dumbasses drown in their own failure.

Re: What should Sue do?

Re: What should Sue do?

It's no use trying if the people above her don't support her.

Just because you are good friends with a manager doesn't mean that you don't have to do your job carefully. And the manager should be more strict. They seem to forget that they are there to work, to actually get something done. And if they are friendly with each other, that's fine, usually a good atmosphere at work helps get the job better done. But in Sue's case, they have taken the friendly atmosphere thing too far!

It seems like a hopeless case, unless at least one of the people above Sue takes Sue's side. Other wise she will never get anybody to listen to her.

Maybe she should have a long talk with her managers, see if they can agree on something, and if it doesn't work out, she is wasting her time and energy.

Good luck to your friend!

Re: What should Sue do?

Why doesn't sue just quit? Go work for their rival and drown them in their own stupidness, let their business fail. Its not worth the trouble..

Re: What should Sue do?

Sue should sue...

Re: What should Sue do?

Phew! At last I made myself read it.

OK! Obviously, at the moment, the problem for the system is Sue. Whatever is claimed, she is not a team player. She tried the "divide and rule" policy but it back fired. She is very emotional, is feeling out of place and has developed a revenge attitude.

She imparted training to one new person, thereby, increasing the rift among members and herself.

She is acutely unaware of the environment she is working in and making little effort to try to learn more about it. She will actually cause the sales to drop down further and, sadly, will lose her job.

Re: What should Sue do?

fire the lazy bums.. and hire a whole new staff!

Re: What should Sue do?

Sue should sue sue on the manager's head..

Re: What should Sue do?

Seems like a lot of Sues here.
