I’m pretty ignorant about poetry. Maybe I can increase my understanding in little bites. Help me out, please, by choosing the ghazals which to you really typify a particular poet’s work. For instance, which is classic Ghalib, or Dagh, or Faiz, or Iqbal, etc. Maybe explain the words and meaning (poetic word order is HARD, folks!) For instance, I really only know one shair, (pathetic, I know!
) Ghalib’s:
Go haath meN jumbish nahiN, aankhoN meN to dam hai,
Rahne do abhi sagar o mina mere aage.
In it, I read his always longing for that which he cannot have, his love of drinking, wordplay (dam [breath/life] in eyes) and a mix of Persian with Hindi-derived words. It’s funny and he pokes fun at himself.
