So I was the at masjid for friday prayers and this guy stands next to me and starts doing his namaz with the jamaat, it was really unorthodox to what I was used to. Throughout the prayer the guy was looking up at the ceiling and reciting something that sounded different and then he sat down with his legs criss crossed when we went down into sajda, it was really…different. Since then I’ve been curious about what sect or school of thought he belonged to, at first I thought he was Shia but then I’ve seen Shias pray before and it didn’t look like that. I’m looking for answers.
Would that have been too sensitive of a discussion?
I know talking about these things in detail esp. in crowded locations like friday prayer can be uncomfortable for some people.

lol you answered your question and yeah I was in hurry to get back to meet up with some friends. What sect do you think he was from? You're really knowledgeable about islam.
I usually drive around 50 km to reach a Masjid for Jumma prayer, and almost everybody there has a somewhat slightly different prayer method
Yea, but I haven't heard of the one he's describing above. Have you?
lol and there's a polite way of asking! I could've done it if it was an aunty or another girl. Just make small talk, smile, tell them you haven't seen them before, discreetly ask them what mosque they regularly attend and that should give you some background to at least craft the discussion in a specific manner to get to your intended answer.

He's never coming back lol, and I don't think there's a nice way of asking somebody what sect they are. It's like asking somebody where are they from, everybody reacts differently to that question. I'm kinda disappointed that you couldn't identify his sect based off this info I gave you, smh.
**No, Shias dont pray like that…
I hv detailed answer for your question but first I wanna know what he was reciting that sounded different? Something not from Quran? Was it in Arabic?
Of course, it doesnt matter what sect he belonged to, If he was not praying according to the way of Prophet Muhammad and his companions…

He seemed so chilled out, I might adopt his namaz style if it's legit.
He might seem "chilled" "cool" and "legit" but he may not be praying as prescribed by Allah to his Messenger (PBUH) through Angel Gabriel. I would adopt the salah according to how the Prophet (PBUH) and his companions performed.
As far as what sect he belonged to, I cannot speculate.
