First of all, I am no expert in food. rather i don’t know anything about cooking (other than making tea which i am really proud of). Anyway, the question is that I have bought some brown rice from a desi store and i cook them using rice cooker. The end product doesn’t look like rice. They are all crumbled, twisted and looks like small little maggots ( :s couldn’t get a better word to explain ).
My question to you guys.
Which brown rice shall i use ? I would prefer if you can show me a picture of the brand. Something that I can easily find here in Canada (Mississauga, GTA area).
Any tips of cooking them ? I normally put 1 cup of rice and 3 cups of water and then just let the rice cooker do the magic but its mgic isn’t working properly.
brown rice is the worst in terms of looking like basmati rice. dont remember which brand we've been using but no matter how we've tweaked our recipe, it always turns into a mushy bunch. try using 2 cups to 1 cup of rice, and see how it does. you could also try boiling the rice in a nonstick pan on the stove top. hopefully it will look less like a ball of rice
Heat water to boiling point. Add brown rice. Cook till Al dente. Strain the water in a colander. Put the rice back into the vessel you used for cooking, cook on heat for just a minute. Switch of heat, cover with a tight lid for 8-10 mins. The steam will cook the rice to perfection.
White rice or brown, this is how most of us South Indians cook rice. This process also reduces the starch quantity in the rice and makes it much healthier.
yar.. had anything to eat or still waiting for a reply... :p
no ... do you have something to share ?

Never used pressure cooker. 2:1 works for me perfectly. Brown rice needs more time to cook.
Brown rice I hear is much healthier. So we use white rice onky once in a while.
I already use 3 cups instead of 2 cups.

i normally don't have that much time to cook it this way. thats the whole reason i got the rice-cooker
The only one that I ever used were from Costco (wild rice) Boy was it ever hard to cook. So I haven't attempted to make brown rice again. But I hear uncle ben's ones are pretty good and quick-ish? Sorry don't know about the desi store ones.
we use Mahatma Basmati Brown rice and couple of times we have used Royal. Both come out good. If you really want to infuse some taste into brown rice, cook it the bagharey rice way.
and no matter what brand you get, it will take long time for brown rice to cook. If its hard for you to wait, I suggest you get rice cooker.
