What Odd jobs have you worked at ?

Re: What Odd jobs have you worked at ?

***I've never done odd jobs either......I think it would have been an interesting experience !

How do you think it helped you grow as a person ?***

Re: What Odd jobs have you worked at ?

It gets you to understand that no job is really menial and that the productivity and output of these jobs contributes to the economic well being of citizens and communities. It also makes you appreciate the value of hard-earned money and manage your earnings... something that the youth of our country don’t necessarily appreciate since their parents take care of all their needs until their University education is completed.

In the words of Khalil Gibran... "in keeping yourself with labour you are in truth loving life... and to love life through labour is to be intimate with life's inmost secret".

Re: What Odd jobs have you worked at ?

***That quote by Gibran really does put it in perspective !

You're right , a lot of people here are not used to or even consider such jobs simply because they have it all paid for by their parents. I do believe children well at least between ages 16-19 should do something like that , if not for anything else but to learn the value of money.
In fact have been working on a couple of my cousins and giving them goals and money management lessons and how to earn it........but then again the set up in Pakistan and mentality here is such that its going to take a lot to change !

Re: What Odd jobs have you worked at ?

It gave me real perspective of life. Some of those jobs lasted for a few days or weeks , but still I learned a few things.

  1. I can understand English spoken in any accent of the world.
  2. No matter how few words you use I can still get your message.
  3. It helped me overcome my prejudices , stereotyping , racism and generalizations.
  4. I have become very practical person.
  5. I became very patient and can deal with any situation in life with minimum stress level.
  6. I was a Xenophobe I became a humanist.

Would you mind telling how come ?

Re: What Odd jobs have you worked at ?

I worked retail jobs (jewellery store, china and giftware, even a lottery kiosk) when I was in highschool and uni and like LC said, it teaches you the value of money and hard work. A lot of kids are raised with a sense of entitlement and are coddled by their parents so that when they have even the smallest bump in their lives, they're unable to cope. Working teaches you to be more independent and more confident.

Re: What Odd jobs have you worked at ?

Agreed. I used to be very shy, approaching people was not my thing at all. Starting off was difficult, but I ended up a really good salesman. I feel comfortable having a conversation with a complete stranger.
