Is it in the way one treats people?
The kind of ppl they surround themselves with?
or is it simply the act of liking and owning nice/expensive material things that makes them materialistic?

Re: What makes someone materialistic?
when the scale/criteria for every type of decision making/satisfaction becomes $$$..
Re: What makes someone materialistic?
meaningful desire of owning nice/expensive material doesnt make one materialistic.
No, treating people using materialistic approach is not good except relationship get greediness and less respect as RV already mentioned in next post.
Re: What makes someone materialistic?
I know a girl (desi) who was always into designer clothes, luxury cars, etc. She'll blow hundreds of dollars on something that she may already have enough of or that will go out of fashion pretty soon. She'll buy you gifts and remind you of the favor. She'll treat you like chit...and resent you for being offended....and rather than apologize....she'll scream at you saying that she bought you this this and that. That's her way of saying "how dare you get mad at me when i bought you that candy bar, shirt, shoes, etc"......She thinks material things can buy respect, alleigance, forgiveness, etc. She places greater priority over those things than the other person's feelings. She even named her first kid after the a foreign country that he was conceived in....much like celebrities. When I think of materialistic....she's the first person that came to mind.
I think a materialistic person is one who bases their self-worth and the worth of others on material things......gives greater priority/consideration to material things than relationships.....and while to a certain extent material things provide all of us with happines....I think that for such a person it's like a primary/main source of happiness.
Re: What makes someone materialistic?
a person who is chiefly interested in material comfort and is hostile or indifferent to art and culture
Re: What makes someone materialistic?
naming your kid after a foreign country = definately materalisitc and a little off.
Re: What makes someone materialistic?
I guess it's their style of conversation and interests. When everything they talk about or do shows some monetory motive or satisfaction, then they are materialistic.

Yes, that's another sign. Predominantly superficial conversation...with very little depth/substance.
Re: What makes someone materialistic?
when money takes over then its materialistic

I think it’s the way one acts with others.
The Imam of our Mosque is a heart surgeon. They live in one of the biggest houses I have ever been to(mA’) but him and his family are the most giving, caring people in our community. They can own all the luxuries in this duniya, and they do for sure, but they are also an amazing family and if you have never been to their house, you would never guess how rich they are.
It’s all about how you come off to others. Showing off your wealth makes you materialistic.
There is nothing wrong in owning nice/expensive material things, because you work hard to get to such a level.
Re: What makes someone materialistic?
environment probably has the largest part to play. You are a product of ur environment. For example someone who comes from an abusive household where the the boy had an alcoholic mother and he had a new surname every week he is much more likely to be abusive towards others than someone from say a more affluent background. The same logic applies to the whole materialistic thing.

More than any thing else, its their preferences, which determine whether they care more for money/material things or the values, the morals and humans.
Re: What makes someone materialistic?
selfishness ? cuz i dont see any reason why wud anyone not be able to think beyond pretty kapray or quality stuff.
other reason can be lack of purpose in life.
