once in my social psychology class my prof asked all students (males and females) to write down Top 5 qualities/traits/characters (whatever u wanna call them) that they would want in their mate/spouse.
he said write down what you really want in your mate/spouse...individually on your own note books...
then he asked ppl to volunteer to read their top 5 lists, he asked several boys and several girls randomly to read them aloud....
the trend was so clear ...
lists that the girls read, had things like
"hardworking
ambitious
intelligentnt
kind "
some where on the top spots of the list...
the lists that boys read had things like
good looking
nice hair, eyes
pretty
beautiful
good figure and attractive face etc as the top couple of spots on the list....
women also had good looking some where in the lists, but definitely not on the top...
most men also had intelligent in their lists but somewhere in the bottom spots...
he then asked how many girls had "intelligent, hardworking, ambitious" sort of things on the top of the list, almost all the girls in the class raised their hands, he asked how many boys had traits that have to do with physical attractivness on the top few spots of the list, and almost all of the boys raised their hands... everyone was amazed, and confirmed that indeed their lists were following a trend...
so yes it differs from person to person to what they desire in a mate/spouse, but given the way ppl respond , and the frequency of responses, you can see the general trend (and then ofcourse there are always exceptions to the general trend but 80-90% population does follow that general trend)
in this thread, when girls are replying listing what they think a guy wants in a wife, they are more frequently listing things like good cook, good listener.... and some of the guys are not being shy in bringing up things related to physical attractiveness

^its simple.
girls want to live out on boyz money and boyz want good looking girlz
^your way of stating it impliies boys are shallow and girls are greedy and materialistic
but the whole thing can be explained a little more respectably by using terms and logic from evolutionary biology too
