What kinda jobs are there in Accounting and Marketing?

I can’t seem to decide between the two majors.

I know I like working with numbers and to an extent I find accounting interesting. However, from the little that I know, jobs in accounting could be very dry and boring, as you’re glued to the screen 24/7 and there isn’t much of an interaction with others.

The reason I’m somewhat considering taking marketing as a major is because I like the element of human interaction. However, I’m not at all a fan of personal selling or of selling over the phone trying to get leads.

Overall, I’d say I like numbers, but I also like interacting with others. I’d love to be on my desk getting the work done, but still like to be walking around and interacting enough, so that I don’t get bored.

What are some possible jobs that I could be looking at should I decide to go with accounting or marketing as a major?

Errrr, Accounting a desk job?.....If you're a bookkeeper for some company yes, if you're a CA/CPA , definitely not.I mean you could crunch numbers if you have a designation, but why would you wanna do that when you can do so much more.

From what I've seen and heard University grads starting out at any of the Big 4 for the first 2 years spend 20% of their time in an office. Most of the time they are out conducting audits and being annoying to clients.AS you progress there is some desk job related/boring work but you're always interacting with people not just sitting in your little cubicle.

Marketing on the other hand is complete contrast from Accounting for the simple reason you don't have a Rules Book governing your every action.I always wanted to do Marketing and still do but due to job uncertainties and desi parents I stuck with Accounting.

currently working at a big 4 myself..i can only wish i was glued to the screen 24x7..mostly our team is on client site at some godforsaken places...but maybe that assumption is correct for the tax folks..they only leave their cubicile to feed..poor folks..

my cousin is a tax accountant, he had to give further exams whilst he was working to specialise in tax accounting,

hes earning big bucks right now

Interesting feedback. For some reason I always thought an accountant or someone in a similar position would be glued to the screen 24/7.

Before you jump in to any of the majors do your research which major will get you a job. Market for Marketing major is extremely tough you must have something extra ordinary from thousands of different resumes that get posted on monster or on careerbuilders. I know someone who works with recruiting firm and he strictly does Accouting and Finance type of job placements.

They do make decent amount of salaries You better have some sort of experience to jump in to a big company for sure. An intership in accounting firm is a huge plus. You can find anywhere from 40k-50k without any fulltime experience [fresh out of college]. They do end up with AR or AP to start up as an entry level. Plus what also matters is the amount of knoweldge you have on different type of Accounting Software.

Again each individual is different your personality has alot to do with this as well. Landing a good job these days is much tougher then it was last year. You are not impressing only one person you have to go through atleast 3-4 people.

both accounting and marketing have furher very diverse areas within the category, and the roles, job type etc can be very different from one to the other.

in accounting the work would be very diff if you ae doign sarbanes oxley audits, taxation, forensic accounting, etc etc

same for marketing, modeling and analytics, strategic marketing, brand/category management, sales, advertising and promotions etc are very different from each other in terms of the type of work that you do.
