What kind of food will have a hard time getting accepted in Pakistan?

Other than the obvious ones that made from pork. Just an example, McDonalds had an uphill battle in China and Taiwan when it wanted to sell hamburgers. Chinese people didn’t consider meat between 2 pieces of bread food. It eventually worked out in McDonald’s favor, but it had to do a lot of marketing.

Let’s keep this to foods that a person from middle class and up will accept, and not get into exotic foods that only a few enjoy (Foi Gras, kyoto beef, etc).

I will start: Vegetarian food.

Re: What kind of food will have a hard time getting accepted in Pakistan?

vegetarian food is too broad and people in pakistan enjoy a wide variety of vegetarian food both desi and non desi. What kind of vegetarian food are you exactly talking about?

When people go out to eat, I doubt anyone wants to eat only vegetarian food. Eating out in Pakistan means eating meat.

Re: What kind of food will have a hard time getting accepted in Pakistan?

Sushi. I dont think it will be widely accepted.

Re: What kind of food will have a hard time getting accepted in Pakistan?

^Sushi is a good example. There are people in Pakistan who are strictly vegetarian. We once had a guest over who was visiting from Pakistan and was vegetarian.

Plus, with the increased awareness about health, I think that more people would opt for vegetarian dishes especially in the more modern cities.

You also have to consider location in Pakistan as well. A fancy Italian restaurant will appeal more to the middle-class family residing in modern cities like Lahore/Islamabad/Karachi as opposed to the smaller cities.

Re: What kind of food will have a hard time getting accepted in Pakistan?

^^ Yeah true, one of my aunts is completely vegetarian and she has never stepped her foot out of Pakistan.

Sushi, is def a good example. the arbi style stuffed rice in lamb roasted over grill...hate that thing.

Re: What kind of food will have a hard time getting accepted in Pakistan?

Middle eastern food will take better in the modern cities. Some dishes in middle eastern cuisine such as their grilled meats, salads, and sauces will do well with the public.

I'm thinking of southern food (like American but southern like soul food). Fried chicken (KFC) is popular over there but I'm not sure the general public will take to mashed potatoes and gravy, collard greens, type stuff. And how about French cuisine? Jamaican?

I'm not sure about Mexican food. It might be accepted because it's spicy like desi cuisine and tortillas are similar to roti.

Re: What kind of food will have a hard time getting accepted in Pakistan?

Is Middle Eastern food popular in Pakistan, such as restaurants?

Haven't seen any middle eastern restaurants in Pakistan. But then the last time I was there was 5 years ago, perhaps there are some ME restaurants there now.

I lived in the ME and I know that the food there is very popular among the desi community. It's very appetizing especially the dips and sauces and grilled meats. And some of the dishes use the same spices as desi cuisine.

Same here in US. Half the customers at any Persian or ME restaurant seem to be desi.

Re: What kind of food will have a hard time getting accepted in Pakistan?

there are a few middle eastern joints in pakistan. and they're pricey too (600pkr+ an entree)

i nominate bagel and cream cheese

Re: What kind of food will have a hard time getting accepted in Pakistan?

i wud say mddle eastern food. cuz really few desis here eat local food. jst few kids who r born and brought up here like local food other wise ppl who have recently moved from pakistan HATE it cuz its too bleh for them.

Re: What kind of food will have a hard time getting accepted in Pakistan?

Majority of the poeple in Pakistan now on vegetarian foods simply becasue they can no longer afford meat and chicken. Even now the whole middle class in Karachi get the chance to cook meat only once a week.

Re: What kind of food will have a hard time getting accepted in Pakistan?

I would say Sushi is one cuisine people wont think too highly of. Desies are too focused on COOKING to even fathom eating UNCOOKED food. LOL. Plus, its healthy...dont we hate healthy food?

Other then that, Ive wracked my brain and come up with zilch. We're pretty accepting as far as food is concerned. The only thing my mom and dad really dislike is Sushi...otherwise they eat everything...Italian, Mexican, Greek, ME, Chinese, Brazilian, etc. Maybe Polish? Ive got Polish friends and can never seem to like Polish food. :(

Re: What kind of food will have a hard time getting accepted in Pakistan?

Steaks and BBQ which is done rare or medium rare.

Lebanese food is popular in Pakistan these days.. Beirut is a popular one in Karachi.

I'd agree with PSQ, don't think people wud accept meat/fish "cooked" in lime juice or vinegar..

Re: What kind of food will have a hard time getting accepted in Pakistan?

^ My dad is an amazing cook. And he soaks chicken in vinegar for a few hours before marinading the pieces in yogurt containing desi spices. The vinegar makes the chicken tender and gives it a mild yet pleasant acidic tang to it. Meats are often marinaded in acids (lemon juice, orange juice, vinegar).

When me and the hubby travelled through Pakistan a couple of years back, we stopped off at my aunts house in Karachi... assuming that she should cater to us 'westerners' she had her team of chefs prepare a western feast for the week we were staying..... and there was all sorts... during that week we had steaks, mash, some french dishes, roast duck, Sushi, Carpaccio and much more on the menu!!! It was yum!

I didn't think Pakistan had advanced that much, but it had been a long time since i had been there last:D

(oh, carpaccio is basically thinly sliced raw meat :D)

Re: What kind of food will have a hard time getting accepted in Pakistan?
