My mom went to the passport office to get her passport renewed today coz now the old passports are going out of circulation soon.
Well, my mom’s family came to Pakistan from Bangladesh in 1974. The only reason people migrated from Bangladesh to Pakistan was b/c they were not Bengalis by race (My mom’s family is Arab and Pashtoon by descent) and did not consider Bangladesh their homeland, but preferred to be in Pakistan which is the homeland for Muslims in the subcontinent.
Anyways, so as usual, sarkaari daftar, mom spent the whole day in the office waiting for her turn. At the end of the day, right when all the paperwork was done and data entered into the system, the guy at the last counter refused to issue the passport citing a new “rule” that has been formed.
Apparently, since mummy came to Pakistan in 1974, which was AFTER the fall of Dhaka/Bangladesh (1971), she will not be considered Pakistani and so cannot be issued the passport.
My mom was like huh I have had two Pakistani passports in the past, hold a Pakistani national ID card and a Sindh domicile! He was like unless you give us some “repatriation papers” (showing repatriation from Bangladesh to Pakistan) OR show some documents that prove that you came to the current Pakistan before 1971 we cannot issue you the passport. He gave my mom her papers and her old passports back.
Khayr, now what options does my mom have? Coz she needs a passport since she has to travel this summer. Getting the repatriation papers is not possible, there are no documents that were issued at all at that time when people migrated. She also doesn’t have any documents to prove that she was in the current Pakistan before 1971, obviously, coz she was not! Well, she WAS in Pakistan but that part of Pakistan is no more Pakistan, its called Bangladesh now. She can produce some fake papers to show her presence in Pakistan before 1971 or else not get a passport!
Anyways, there are all these “agents” who for a certain amount of money get everything taken care of and will get your passport made for you, so now we are going to contact one of those
What other option do we have?
This seems to be simply a way to trouble people and extort money out of them.
I can understand if they want to enforce this rule to prevent illegal immigrants from getting passports but my mom already holds a Pakistani passport and a national ID card so I don’t see the point of the objection here ![]()
p.s. There was no clause in the form which asked for any such information though so I am thinking maybe the guy put this obstacle just to extort some bribe? This COULD also be a possibility?
