what it means when it is said man was made from clay

Molvi’s point of view:
Molvis argue that man was made from REAL clay. they think allah sat down and shaped the human beings from clay.

Defects in molvi’s point of view:
however, this is contrary to what is visible. if we are made of clay, then

  1. we might end up in trouble if we bathe.
  2. why does no mud come off when we scrape our body?
  3. why is the chemical composition of clay and body cells different?
if some molvi tells us that man is made from clay, will he not turn a sensible common man away from islam?

The real meaning:
the real meaning of being made from clay is, that human beings have a flexible character. they can easily be moulded into anything. human beings can easily be influenced and people among us show extremes of kindness as well as cruelty. thus saying that human beings are made from clay, means they can easily be influenced. they have felxible selves, as if made from damp clay.

similarly, when it is said that a jinn is made from fire, it never points to a supernatural creation which is not visible. it tells us that those referred to as jinns, in the relating verses, have a violent and corrupt character. therefore their selves, are associated with fire.

Assalam-o-Alaikum,

Quite true Jewels. You always provide good points here on this forum.

Here I will provide some supplementry information to make this issue more clear.

I would like to tell you that this literary work is done by MIRZA TAHIR AHMAD, Fourth and present Khalifa of our Jamaat in his great book REVELATION, RATIONALITY, KNOWLEDGE AND TRUTH. May Allah give him long life so that he can serve islam and Ahmadiyyat.

THE ROLE OF CLAY

In the Quran, dry dust or wet clay are also repeatedly mentioned as stages through which life passed in ancient times. In surrah Al-'Imran, it states:

“Khalaq-ho min turab-in” (3:60)

…He created him (Adam) out of dust (turab)

On the same subject we read the following:

“Khalaqaqom min teen-in” (6:3)

…He created you from clay (humid or moist dust)

Clay is also mentioned in Sura Al-Rahman, but this time it is not wet clay which is reffered to for it is clearly stated:

Khalaq-al insaan-a min … (55:15)

He created man from dry ringing clay like pieces of potery

Here its quality is described as having a plate-like appearence dry enough to create ringing sounds, like broken pieces of pottery. Again in Sura Al-Hijar clay is mentioned three times with added qualification that man is created from dry ringing clay, formed out of dark fermenting mud. (reference see 15:27, 29, 34)

The overall scenario as presented by the Holy Quran envisions life as having been advanced step by step from dust, from water, from clay and also from fermenting blackish mud which subsequently turned into dry ringing clay. These last two stages attract particular attention. No man of the era when Quran was revealed could even remotely relate the creation of man to dry ringing clay made out of stagnant mud…

Later in the book this point has been discussed that how the evolution took place from clay, mud and water. So this clay basically refers to the origion of humans.

I think that it also means that the survival of man depends upon clay. The whole food chain starts from the soil. So what we eat, what becomes part of our body is basically coming from clay. This can be one reason of saying that man is made of clay. This is my personal feeling, what do you people think about it?

Thank you, mirza yasir.
what you posted was supposed to be my next essay on the forum :)
and btw, your "supplementary" essays are often better than my original ones :)

it is the beauty of this deep and profound book that it has an endless number of meanings hidden in it. when we talk about a verse, we must have to keep in mind, that its not an either-or question. all possible meanings are right. a little thinking about the matter can reveal even more meanings which might not have occured to even the greatest of scholars.

So be on watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke
covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. 'O our lord remove thou from us, the chastisement; we are believers.' How should they have the reminder? seeing a clear Messenger has already come to them, then they turned away from him, and said,' A man, tutored, possessed!"
( the koran, verse 11-14, chapter 44, Smoke, the nuclear explosion.)
