THE ROLE OF CLAY
In the Quran, dry dust or wet clay are also repeatedly mentioned as stages through which life passed in ancient times. In surrah Al-'Imran, it states:
“Khalaq-ho min turab-in” (3:60)
…He created him (Adam) out of dust (turab)
On the same subject we read the following:
“Khalaqaqom min teen-in” (6:3)
…He created you from clay (humid or moist dust)
Clay is also mentioned in Sura Al-Rahman, but this time it is not wet clay which is reffered to for it is clearly stated:
Khalaq-al insaan-a min … (55:15)
He created man from dry ringing clay like pieces of potery
Here its quality is described as having a plate-like appearence dry enough to create ringing sounds, like broken pieces of pottery. Again in Sura Al-Hijar clay is mentioned three times with added qualification that man is created from dry ringing clay, formed out of dark fermenting mud. (reference see 15:27, 29, 34)
The overall scenario as presented by the Holy Quran envisions life as having been advanced step by step from dust, from water, from clay and also from fermenting blackish mud which subsequently turned into dry ringing clay. These last two stages attract particular attention. No man of the era when Quran was revealed could even remotely relate the creation of man to dry ringing clay made out of stagnant mud…
Later in the book this point has been discussed that how the evolution took place from clay, mud and water. So this clay basically refers to the origion of humans.

I think that it also means that the survival of man depends upon clay. The whole food chain starts from the soil. So what we eat, what becomes part of our body is basically coming from clay. This can be one reason of saying that man is made of clay. This is my personal feeling, what do you people think about it?
