What is your Plan B?

Now this isn’t a comfortable topic for most people, but what would you do if you were terminated from your current job? Termination could mean a layoff/firing/separation.

I think that it is critical that everyone thinks about this at least once. I was pondering this not because I was worried about being let go, but rather due to burning out from my current line of work.So I have been thinking about Plan B:

  • Go to Business School because there aren’t enough I-bankers (ha ha).
  • Study commodities. This means moving to Chicago or Kansas City.
  • Write a book on how to screw up a country.
  • Be a dirtbag at home. Don’t shave, wear sweats and pick up the fine art of channel surfing.

THEN I found out about my company’s little known policy about 1 years leave. Apparently I can take a year off to do something ‘productive’ and still be eligible to come back to the firm. This really made my day

So I guess my question is part fantasy and part dismal reality.

Re: What is your Plan B?

**a great topic to discuss. most of us at one point in life or the other go thru this kind of evaluation whether to stay put wherever he is or in anticipation of the worse try to move on to something else.

i'm going thru the same prospects but my situation is a bit different. the prof i work with, who receives the funding for research work, has been diagnosed with breast cancer and is undergoing treatment. as a result, i've been laid off for three months. i'm due to return to work on Feb 1. on one hand, i pray for her full and fast recovery and on the other, i wunder what if she doesn't respond to treatment favourably then what will happen to all of us who work with her.

i pray, i wait and i hope for the best. lets see what happens. i find solace in namaaz and seek sabr...as we have been commanded by Allah Almighty:

  1. wasta'iino bis sabri wassat [seek help thru patience and salah]
  2. innallaaha ma'as saabireen [verily, Allah is with patient people]**

**beautiful name/nick mashaa Allah :)

Re: What is your Plan B?

*I am sorry to hear about your situation and May Allah give your Professor good health. *

I really think that you should (if you have not already) start talking with other Professors/Researchers to see if you might have an opportunity to work elsewhere. Use these few months to network with others in your field, seek out opportunities (go back to school for Masters, Doctorate) or even apply for jobs that you might be interested in.

Easier said than done, right? Which is why you should treat this time as a valuable resource where you can explore possibilities and make the necessary connections. Assume the worst (that you will not be able to return in Feb 2011) and plan accordingly.

I wish you the best and do feel free to share your thoughts and what you are up to.

Re: What is your Plan B?

A brilliant food for thought discussion.

Even if we are happily employed , we must realize that the market conditions we live in today are very fast changing. The businesses change very quickly, its becoming more and more competitive out there ... I know that many people are caught offguard when they are told they are on the list C on the performance charts and hence might be put up for redundancy or development plans!

Hence , even if we are well employed , we all need a plan B. In my opinion, networking becomes most effective when you are in a safe position .. so network around with people who are in the similar field and become friends with them ... get to know their organizations ... this hard work will always pay you off in difficult times.

Dont wait till the last moment. it will most certainly not bring you any results and you will be lingering on kismet kai saharay !

In short, drive change in your life rather then lettng change happen to you and get you in the most vulnerable time.
