and plastic covers! I mean com’n plastic covered remotes, sofas, carpets.
Ok it makes sense if they are not in use and you are away for an extended period of time. BUT covering daily use items in plastic covers!.
And it’s not just US (Pakistanis & Indian) apparently it’s common for people from sub-continent. In my uni days I was living with a Sri-lankan family (ahmmm the mixed race daughter surprisingly had no Srilankan looks, may be because the late father was a gora. but that is a separate issue) and all over the house carpets had plastic cover! of course I ripped that off in my room, and paid for it when I left.
I hope they did not have plastic covered , raza-e and kambal. What about food they ate plastic covered food too.
Yesterday I was at a desi home their coffee table was plastic covered , for a long time their chairs also remained plastic covered.
I stayed over at a friends house when i was younger… apart from the stereotypical household items that are usually at the centre of satirical depiction, they also had plastic covered beds… most uncomfortable nights sleep ever… and i’ve slept in military bunkers before…
Suffice to say i never stayed over at their house again.
oh they would if they could pack food in bite sized edible plastic sachets. I guess it’s the too much effort and COST which refrains them from doing that. Otherwise who would ruin disposable crockery with food stains.
Italian people often do this too. Ack, in the middle of summer sitting down on a plastic-covered couch...not pleasant at all! Its thrifty in a way, I mean the furniture will stay like new for years and years....but me, I;d rather go for comfort and eventually replace it when it gets old.
desis aren't the only ones though - I've seen Italians and Greeks do it too, and yes often to the same extent or even worse than I've seen at desi people's homes.
My mom used to take me every now and then to her "ladies luncheon" when I was a teen. They'd rotate the hostess, everyone took a turn, and there was this one italian lady who had plastic on every chair, couch, lampshade and carpet. She didnt have air conditioning and in the heat of the summer, I rested my arm on the arm of the couch while they gabbed...well when I went to lift my arm off the couch I think I ripped of a layer or 2 of skin. OUCH man. The poor husband if he wore shorts. But then again, maybe the wifey did it on purpose lol.

yeah Italians and Greeks are European version of DESIS. And to some extent Spanish too.
I know some people back in Pakistan do not remove the plastics covers from the seats of their new cars but I have never seen plastic covering in any desi home though.
I've never seen a carpet covered with plastic, I did see an old bedsheet at someone's place and they didn't even remove it when the guests arrived.
I plastic wrapped my remote to save it from my neighbor's kid, who'd attack it first thing, remove the batteries and throw them or worst chew on them. It didn't work though he ripped it off quite easily.
