What is this thing for?

I know it’s a serving dish but to serve what?

Re: What is this thing for?

First i thought it was a chicken brick, now it looks like one of those things that old aunties used to store their eggs in.

Re: What is this thing for?

Casserole dish

Re: What is this thing for?

^Are you sure?

Re: What is this thing for?

Yes normally you see these made out of cermaic/porcelain, in that case they are casserole/roasting dishes.

The glass/perspex type ones are ordinary serving dishes. They do not have to hold anything specific. I think you can get pyrex versions too.

When I worked part-time for Royal Doulton/Wedgewood, we use to sell these.

Are you looking to buy one?

Re: What is this thing for?

You can use it to put your rotian/Chapatian in it. In USA they sell them at Mexican stores as Tortilla (spelled as tortia) Server. Tortilla is Mexican Chapatian.

Re: What is this thing for?

^errrmmmm....that was a joke, right?

Yeah i thought they were for serving roasted meat.

Yes I always wanted to buy one.

Re: What is this thing for?

We used to have one of these at home when I was younger - we used to store eggs in them on some shredded tissue paper stuff that you can get..............

Re: What is this thing for?

^Why would someone use a procelain dish to store eggs unless they’re planning to hatch them.

Re: What is this thing for?

^ Its an auntie thing...

I have seen chicken shaped tortilla warmers being sold at Mexican stores but this link will show you some other designs.

haan to main bhi kisi ki auntie hoon.

this is quite different to that hen on the nest thing i posted…it’s a simple round pot with a simple round lid.

I see this hen thing only in countryside cottages on their dining tables.

Re: What is this thing for?

OMG! I have one of these lol! Mine is white milk glass, it was my mother’s when she was a newlywed and she gave it to me for my kitchen. Initially, they were used for casseroles and side dishes but these days, they are really just used as decoration and display.

They are covered casserole dishes…for more on the history etc see here
