Try a non-desi store or even an Oriental grocer and ask for star-anise. It smells like saunf if I remember correctly.

It is easily available in the US,even at some non desi stores.
And yes it has saunf like smell,but is stronger and sweeter.It is actually a nice smell and I love to use it in pulaos and biryanis and it gives a nice aroma.

CB star anise is used alot in chinese cooking. Try in tesco, asda etc and also in oriental stores!

All super markets sell it. I can see it in Sainsbury's.
