Toffee / Sweet?

Its Khat-mithRa in Sindhi… The chaska of saying khat-mithRa can not be expressed with this toffee?

What are some other words that you think are best expressed in your own language?

Re: What is the word in your langauge for ....

as a kid, we called it "chijjii" [cheezeN. things] and sometimes "lemonchoos" [lemon=lemon; choos = lick/suck]...

...the local Baniyaa used to free treat us with those confectioneries when we bought anything from him...it is called "ghilaiya" :) i loved it and, as a result, i was more than happy volunteering my services in fetching stuff for older men and women of my village...i used to get a lot of 'ghilaiya'. :)

Re: What is the word in your langauge for ....

machi se I remember 'Pakhi' Sindhi / Punjabi word for bird. the way it can express innocence in-built in nature of birds can't be defined in 'Parinda' or 'Darinda', these sounds too heavy for poor birds :(

Re: What is the word in your langauge for …

halawa in arabic . :snooty:

Re: What is the word in your langauge for …

toffee is halwa , they what they call halwa?

Re: What is the word in your langauge for ....

The alternate word for bird is 'panchi'. Parinda is Persian. It does not sound 'heavy' to Persian speakers.
It is like how Bengalis used to make fun of the Arabic word 'khatam'. 'KHabrein KHatam hoeen'.
The 'kh' for them was just too strange. But obviously for Arabic speakers, there is nothing strange in they 'kh' sound.

Re: What is the word in your langauge for …

yes this Panchi from Hindi origin sounds suitable to birds, but it has been used only in Urdu poetry. No one now says ‘deewar pe panchi betha hai’. Its ‘deewar pe parinda betha hai’.

I feel heaviness in word parinda, when I listen to lines from Malika Pukhraj’s ’ Lo phir basant aai’… kheton ka her charinda, baghon ka her parinda’ and this reminds another rhyming word ‘darinda’ :hehe:

Re: What is the word in your langauge for ....

'Khat mitthay' is also used in Urdu. But not for all sweets. It is used for sweet/sour taste.

Re: What is the word in your langauge for …

panchi is a common Urdu/ Hindi word. It does not belong to Hindi alone. In other words, it is a Hindustani word, as English would put it.

Yes, parinda is more common than panchi. But that does not make it a non-Urdu word. The line between Hindi and Urdu is quite blurry, especially at the basic word level.

The relationship between parinda and panchi is similar to that between khoon and lahoo. True that Persian khoon is used more often, but lahoo also remains an Urdu word.

My nick khoji remains an Urdu word even though today most people would instead use the alternatives like mutalashi, researcher, investigator, etc.

so what is the word for other sweets... goli?

Re: What is the word in your langauge for ....

Yes now its common Hindi / urdu word, but it might be in use way before Urdu started developing. Someone, who have gone through classic Hindi literature like Ramayan and Mahabharat may clarify what word they used to describe 'bird/birds' in ancient India.
