What is the word for "yawn"?

Re: What is the word for “yawn”?

^ Right on KKF bhai… :k:

Vaasi, abasssee and avaasee are all Punjabi, Potowari and Paharee dialects respectively.

I guess proper Urdu would call such an act Angrai… however various regional dialects must have thier own word for this act…

Re: What is the word for “yawn”?

**thank you…urdu word for YAWN is JAMAAII…and yes for STRETCHING the word is angRaaii in urdu.

achchhii urdu yaa mushkil urdu yaa saqeel urdu meN jo koi umda writer apne article meN use karegaa to vo lafz hai KHAMYAAZAH…yeh lafz urdu e mo’alla meN use hogaa :D**

Re: What is the word for "yawn"?

I think its a typo since i am pretty sure you know it that its jamaahi جماھی (jamaaii is the hindi word for damaad/son in law) :)

also doesnot خمیازہ (khamyaaza) means punishment like "ghalti ki hai tou khamyaaza tou bhugtna hi pare ga". a abit confused as to how it relates to yawning. :)

Re: What is the word for "yawn"?

**nahiiN Bless, the CORRECT word is jamaaii [no h]...jamhaaii is INCORRECT which is accepted by majority outside the literary circles and this error in language is called "Ghalat ul aam" yaa "Ghalat ul awaam". the other similar sounding word is not jamaaii, its hindi word called jaNwaaii [jeem, vaao, alif, hamza, ye, noon Ghunnah]

maiN ne ek she'r aaj se koi 3 saal pahle likhaa thaa jis meN maiN ne lafz jamhaaii hii likhaa thaa aise:

jis dam tu uThii so kar lete huye jamhaaii
hai mauj-e-balaa beshak, zaalim! terii angRaaii

to mere ustaad Dr Sarwar Alam "Raaz" saaHib ne merii tasHeeH kii aur farmaayaa k saHeeH lafz jamhaaii nahiiN hai bal k jamaaii hai.

re: Khamyaazah...yeh lafz faarsii kaa hai jo urdu meN jab aayaa to uske ma'nii badal gaye...magar literary circles meN iske ma'nii farsii waale bhii liye jaate haiN...agar aap kisi mustanad luGhat meN dekheN to is laffz ke kaii ma'nii darj mileNge. maiN vo ma'nii aapko bataanaa chaahuuNgaa:

Khamyaazah = badla, makaafaat, angRaaii, shikanja men de kar aazaa ko kheeNchnaa, takleef, pashemaanii, afsos

yeh ma'aanii bhii liye jaate haiN to maiN arz karuuNgaa k ek lafz ke kai kai ma'nii hote haiN is liye ek ma'ni Khamyaazah ke jamaaii bhii hai.**

Re: What is the word for "yawn"?

oh acha acha...i always used to think its jamaahi as this is how i saw it as. thanks for the correction.

so son-in-law is janwaai? (ek purani anil kapoor ki film hai "janwaai raja" and in that they wrote it as jamaai in both urdu and english...i think that made me confused since i thought if its jamaai for son in law then for yawn it should be jamaahi but thanks for correcting me).

yeah i know all those words for khamyaaza but heard angrayee for it for the first time. :)
