What is the state of IT in Pakistan?

I am talking about systems, networks, data centers, etc, not programming or development. I know I will sound like a complete Jahil here, but are most mid size to large companies using computers to do their business? If so, do most have a large server rooms, or even a data center within their office to accommodate all that?

What about requirements like power and cooling? Even a server room with 30-50 servers would require a lot of steady power. if not, then expensive UPS to accommodate power outages. Are most companies open to spending money on IT, or is money tight?

How about data lines, like T1, T3, etc? Are those common place, or really really hard to get done in Pakistan?

what? LOL, that’s funny. I am assuming they are selling computers by the bulk.

The IT industry has been excellent in Pakistan in recent years. With the introduction of Telco, Banking, and other sectors, there has been a significant growth in IT infrastucture in Pakistan. Most foreign companies like IBM, HP, Sun, Siemens, EMC, Teradata, Cisco, Microsoft (to name a few) have not only establised but prospered in a way never before. There has been a number of projects installing new networks (including WiMax) and fibre channel connectivity across Pakistan. Yes the power shortage is a problem but it is not really affecting the infrastructure as much. State-of-the-art technology such as bladesystems, SAN, virtualization, super domes and other high end equipments are constantly being implemented here by mid-to-big organizations. Even, the governament has taken IT initiatives and invested heavy in many projects like NADRA.

So is it pretty common for foreign consultants to come in to Pakistan for projects, or is enough talent available locally?
