Although it differs from religion to religion and from culture to culture but some one on this forum already said that purpose of life is to worship Allah.
I will add to punjabi's statement, that
purpose of our life as muslims, and in the
Ummah of Rasul-Ullah SWA, is not only
worship Allah, but also to propagate Islam
with wisdom.

As on serious note, this topic could start a very serious discussion involving variety of opinions. To start with, One could very well argue that If the sole purpose of our existence is to worship Allah (God), then He really didn't need to give us Ikteyaar meaning he could have had Universe filled with Fharrishey instead of disobeying humans....

As human beings, who are weak, limited and prone to error, maybe he gave us iktheyaar(choice) so that people could choose whether they wanted to worship him or not. And in order to test the strength of peoples convictions in belief in god he made available a variety of "paths", many (or all but one) of which led away from the path of god. maybe in this society of many desires and temptations he wanted to find out who were the true "abdullah's" ?
If this is the case then naturally the core question would then be how do we attain a true conviction in god (the one divine creator) so that we do not go astray either at all or it is minimised ?

I have to say that this indeed is a great topic that Ghulam Ashraf choose. He is the one who put it right in his second posting on the board. Imranz, your explaination does not fit the Islamic Criteria. Let me tell u guys what I know about this issue.
I have only created Jinns and Mankind,so that they may serve (worship) Me. (Qur'an 51:56)
This is the Ayah in the Quran that explains everything we are trying to discuss amongst ourselves. Simple & self-explanatory.
Our sole purpose of existence on this planet is to worship allah (swt) and to please him in every act that we do. We have come here to earn Heaven or Hell for ourselves. Whatever we do during our lifetime here will decide if we goto Heaven or Hell.
Why then did Allah (swt) not create Angels only? Good Question, now think on it !
What do angels do? They cant do wrong. They are created to listen to the commands of allah (swt) always. In other words, Allah (swt) created them perfect, but why did he not do the same for mankind?
This is because Allah(swt) wanted to see if we have enough believe in him that we obey him after having so much temptations and desires in us. After all this, where should we go?
When Allah (swt) was creating the Mankind, the angels told him(swt) that dont create them because they will get involved in the duniya and not worship you. But Allah (swt) knowing better went ahead and craeted us, so when we go to pray and talk about allha(swt), he(swt) says to the angels that see my servant is doing my Dhikr (rememberance).
Basically, he wanted to see if we would be loyal to him(swt) in this duniya.
