You are right … I thought later on that bhaley are equivalent to bharrey
But if balai is the same thing as malai then this is not unusual … since Makkah is also called Bakkah - It seems Arabic might not be only place where the ‘b’ and ‘m’ are interchangeable …

There is no difference. Balai refers to the top layer and malai as you know is cream.
You can use word milai without mentioning milk but with balai you have to say doodh ki balai.

I've checked dictionaries now and bebo is right on the button ... balai is the "fore/top layer" of something call it "froth" ... whereas malai is specifically meant for cream and does not necessarily mean "top layer" but has reference to the colour of cream as well. Balai is not linked to the cream colour.

In India, we refer it as "malai", both in Hindi and Punjabi it is cream is referred as same

Meetha Dahi, and Milk related product are same since Bhagwan shri Krsihn's maakhan leela, He was called Maakhan Chor:)

Its mithi dahi and mitho kheer... Kheer is milk in Sindhi... Urdu wali Kheer = Kheerni in Sindhi

Doodh ki Balai (UP dialect of urdu) is actual word. It derived from bala (above) and technically above/top layer on milk is suppose to be Balai.
I also heard many people use malai but I cant confirm origin.
