So, I came across more than once on the internet where right wing nuts in the US have accused muslims of using “Taqyya principles” to undermine western values. So, I gooogled it and got this from Wikipedia.
So, the questions I have are 1) what is Taqiyaa (I thought it was pillow), and 2) what are its importance? Also, are muslims really allowed to use deception in cause of advancing faith? If so, does that not go against basic principles of Islam?

To lie is great sin … however, like all sins there are other harms that can outweigh the lie in certain situations, these tend to be mortal danger situations or to save the image of a person to hide their sins. In such cases these things become advisable and required even. Many people are compulsive liars and that is not allowed at all. To tell the truth when it could harm oneself is considered a noble thing and one of excellence and jihad. However, to lie in that situation is merely allowed - i.e. it is not a sin in the respect that it would otherwise be if there was nothing on the line. Anyone who thinks it is noble to lie or cheat anyone is mistaken. We must as a standard protocol be upright and truthful … much of talk of taqiyya in the media is another tool to maintain mistrust on the Muslims.

Read story of Ammar e Yasir. Taqaiyya can be used to preserve life/faith, for using deception to advance faith does not make any sense.

I also thought it was a pillow. I never heard of it myself until I started reading comments on articles having anything to do with Muslims or Islam.

Reply to allegation that in Islam lying is permissible for spreading faith and is called taqiyya

Maybe shias can explain better, but this shows the ignorance that an average joe on the street has about Islam.

Lying when life in danger , and I don’t think shias are that desperate to lie to advance faith which I believe no other religion is that desperate too

ITs probably because you are spelling the word wrong and hence pronouncing it wrong! The word for pillow is Takya and the word being discussed RN is Taqaiyya! Different pronunciation if you hear anyone talking about Taqaiyya whilst saying Takya well go ahead and correct because that is essentially a mispronunciation of the word itself

Can some one share classical shia text to support taqiyyah can only be used when life is in danger? plus is it allowed for all including leaders or leaders can not do taqiyyah?
and does the actions of all shia imams during times of khulafa rashedeen is considered as taqiyyah?
