yes that true, his mother tongue is marati, but i surprise to see him speaking in marati, i have lot of friends in bangalore whose mother tongue is marati, but nobody knows it, infact the district of Belguam in Karnataka speaks only Marati
Re: What is Rahul Dravid's mother tongue?
Damn... that must be hard for the Indians... almost every player has a different native language.
In Pakistan, this is not as big of a problem since Punjabi is almost universally understood even by non-Punjabis. I don't think anyone speaks Baluchi or Sindhi. The only players whose native language the rest of the country won't necessarily understand are Younis, Umer Gul, Afridi.

Does anyone what is the language of other Indian players? I think there must be atleast 10 languages spoken by Indian players.
Re: What is Rahul Dravid's mother tongue?
YK and Afridi's mother tongue could be Pashtu but their 'native' language is street lingo of Karachi. They speak really rough slang urdu and that too very fast.
Re: What is Rahul Dravid's mother tongue?
the following r the native language speakers in indian team according to my guess:marathi(dravid, tendulkar)
bengali(ganguli)
kannada(kumble and dravid must be knowing it too)
tamil(dineshKarthick)
telugu(laxman)
punjabi(harbhajan,yuvraj)
gujrati(zaheer,pathan)
hindi(everyone though can be 1 or 2 exception like coach and physio:))
malyalam(sreeshanth)
Bhojpuri(hope dhoni speks this at home)
these r only guesses stand to get corrected. And mostly all these players come from cities then im sure everyone must quite conversant in english if not hindi.
And than if u r in a group then u tend to speak in language the majority speaks.Like i being from north india was able to pick telugu and tamil well coz i lived with majority of tamil and telugu guys.
Re: What is Rahul Dravid's mother tongue?
All of them must be knowing hindi since it is the national language .So communication wouldn't be a big problem.
Re: What is Rahul Dravid's mother tongue?
yup im sure they all speak in hindi rather than their native languages...

I think Zaheer Khan speaks Marathi. He is from Shrirampur in Maharashtra.
Re: What is Rahul Dravid's mother tongue?
Are you sure all can speak Hindi? I have known some Indians who don't speak Hindi but can understand most of it.

That is true. In India, the regional identity is very strong and many Indians prefer to speak in their mother tongue. Also languages in South India are very different from Hindi. Tamil is not based on Sanskrit so Tamilians and Malayalees find difficult to learn Hindi. Most Kannadigas and Telugus can manage some Hindi.
Re: What is Rahul Dravid's mother tongue?
Hindi and English are the common languages and almost everybody in the team understand the two.
Kannadigas, Malyalees, Tamilians and to an extend Telugus can understand each other because of the number of common words (each with minor intonation differences)....in many cases they are not actually common words per se but words from one language have proliferated into the other .... if you go to Chennai, the street Tamil there has more words from not only the other South India languages but also from Hindi, Urdu, English etc. The locals talking that don't even know it is an imported word.
This sometimes leads to very funny episodes. For example the Tamil word "ambattan" means barber. So when sometime ago they were refreshing street signs in multiple languages, a small bridge called "ambattan bridge" was about to be translated as "barber bridge" in the English version of the sign.
Fortunately somebody remembered that its original name was "Hamilton Bridge" which over time the locals had mutated to "ambatan bridge"!
Re: What is Rahul Dravid's mother tongue?
Is he Maharashtrian?
Yes, Marathi is his mother tongue. Mixed parentage - His father is a Tamilian (born of Tamil parents who had settled in Central India), while Mom is 100% Maharashtrian. Family speaks Marathi at home.
Interestingly, the Dravid surname is found only among Maharashtrians and indicates Tamil Brahmin ancestory (large group of Tamil Brahmins migrated to Central India to take on priestly roles in the Maratha kingdoms, and stayed on, essentially becoming Maharashtrians over time. Dravid surname recognizes their roots).
Re: What is Rahul Dravid's mother tongue?
gujrati(zaheer,pathan) .
Zaheer khan plays for baroda but he is not gujarati ... he is maharashtrian and speaks marathi.

Malayalam has lot of words from Tamil and Sanskrit. Telugu and Kannada have lot of Sanskrit works. Tamil in the purest form has no Sanskrit words. Tamil spoken by Brahmins have lot of Sanskrit words.
