I’m watching a cooking video, and the chef is calling for a tsp of rai or raai daana. What is this?
Re: What is raai daana?
Oops!
I figured it out -- it seems to be another word for kale sarsoN/ black mustard seed...
Re: What is raai daana?
yup its mustard seeds ... they taste aweful though ... but if you use them in really little quantity they dont taste as bad :(
Re: What is raai daana?
rai daana is a variety of mustard seed which is much smaller and yellowish in color. it's used more in achaars etc.

kaali sarsoN [black mustard] is different. it's seeds are bigger and has more oil content while rai is much smaller and off black and has lesser oil content. it's used mostly NOT for oil but for pickle preparations.
Re: What is raai daana?
Interesting! This is for a mixed vegetable dish called bakala. Maybe it is an achaar? I didn't watch the whole video yet.

oh i see...i got no idea...i remember when i was a kid my mom used to make achaars and she used it in mango pickles called arakka...i don't see this specialty mango pickles anywhere in the stores...mango halves are stuffed with masaalaas [including rai seeds]...and put in the sun for several days to incorporate flavours and loosen the jkin. arakkaas are yummy! i get them from India every year.
Re: What is raai daana?
I use rai dana for bhaghaar sometimes.
