What is predestined in our life?

I heard our time of birth, which family we are born into, whom we get married to, how many kids we have and finally the time of our death is destined.

Can you guys help me find quotes from Quran to be sure of this?.

Thanks.

Re: What is predestined in our life?

Complex subject. You are right that some of the things take place regardless of our own will, such as our bithy, sickness, blindness, death and so on. I do not think that getting married and having kids quite belongs to the same category. If you are looking for list of things from the Holy Quran then remember that Quran is book of principles and very hardly goes into specifics.

Anyway, some of the verses from the Holy Quran that point towards man's free will are:

[13:11] Surely the Almighty changes not the condition of a people unless they change that which is in themselves.

[2:286] The Almighty imposes not on a soul a duty but to the extent of its ability.

[5:8] The Almighty desires not to place a hardship on you but He desires to purify you and to complete His favor upon you, so that you may be thankful.

[39:41] Whoever goes aright, for his own soul he goes aright; and whoever goes astray, to his own detriment he goes astray.

[53:38] And no bearer of a burden bears another's burden ….

[10:108] Say: O people, the truth has come to you from your Lord; So whoever goes aright, goes aright only for the good of his own soul: and whoever errs, he errs only against it.

Re: What is predestined in our life?

im no expert on mutazilli phylosophy but others on here know a fair bit

off the top of my head i can tell you hadiths are full of indirect examples of predestination. for example for prophecies to be told by Apostle of Allah subhanahuwata'ala, predestination must be a factor

lets look at the predestination of messih ad-dajjal and muslims as a group:

he will have special powers, he will be able to answer requests (prayers) of people (bring back to life elusion, wealth, health etc etc)

muslims will still win

we still have to work for it but Allah knows everything!

Allahu Akbar

Re: What is predestined in our life?

i think below will satisfy your questions.Abdulla bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that

Allah’s Messenger, the true and truly inspired said, “(The matter of the creation of) a human being is collected in the womb of the mother in forty days, and then he becomes a clot of thick blood for a similar period (of forty days), and then a piece of flesh for a similar period. Then Allah sends an angel who is ordered to write four things. He is ordered to write down his deeds, his Rizq (livelihood), his (date of) death, and whether he will be blessed or wretched (in religion). Then the soul is breathed into him. **
**[Sahih Bukhari and Muslim]

Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that,

One day Allah’s Messenger (may Allah exalt his mention) was sitting with a wood in his hand and he was scratching the ground. He raised his head and said: There is no one amongst you who has not been allotted his seat in Paradise or Hell. They said: O' Allah’s Messenger, then why should we perform good deeds, why not we depend upon our destiny? There upon he said: No, do perform good deeds, for everybody will find easy to do such deeds as will lead him to his destined place for which he has been created; then he recited this verse (of the Holy Qur’an): “Then, who gives to the needy and guards against evil and accepts the excellent (the truth of Islam), We shall make easy for him the easy end; and who is miserly and considers himself Self-Sufficient and denies the excellent (the truth of Islam), We shall make easy for him the difficult end."(92-5)
[Sahih Bukhari and Muslim]

theres many, i see it everywhere, however this should be more then sufficient

Re: What is predestined in our life?

I think birth is predestined. rest I wouldn't say because even dua changes divine decree and I've witnessed it happen even in the event of a very unlikely marriage...

Re: What is predestined in our life?

Finally a decent topic in this bigotry battlefield.

[64:11] No affliction comes about but by Allah's permission; and whoever believes in Allah, He guides aright his heart; and Allah is Cognizant of all things.

إِنَّمَا النَّجْوَىٰ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ لِيَحْزُنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَلَيْسَ بِضَارِّهِمْ شَيْئًا إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ ۚ وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ }
[58:10] Secret counsels are only (the work) of the Shaitan that he may cause to grieve those who believe, and he cannot hurt them in the least except with Allah's permission, and on Allah let the believers rely.

Afaik, Allah (swt) is not bound by his creation of time, so He has an insight to all future events. He know what has happened, what is happening and what will happen. He has given us free will and if He wishes for something to happen, it will happen. Even if that restricts our freewill, like a moment of realization..

Like if I decide to disbelieve Him, he'll put that 2nd thought? I'm not sure.

Re: What is predestined in our life?

thank you all for replying and helping me out understand it. However i am still confused and i think i should ask a scholar about this face to face :)

thanks again.

Re: What is predestined in our life?

The idea of predestination is about freewill ie do humans have a choice in doing what they do?

1)It is true that nothing happens without the will of Allah ie whatever we do if Allah had not allowed us the choice to do it then we could not do it. It is in this sense that we say that whatever happens is will of Allah. This does not mean what we are doing is done by Allah.

2)Does Allah already know whatever is going to happen in all its detail? If yes, how?

This is where logic fails because it is not possible for the infinite to know the infinite. This is why the Quran does not say Allah is all knowing but that he knows all things. It does not say Allah is all powerful but that he has power over all things.

Things are limited or finite therefore it is possible for Allah to know them within limits.

Allah has two kinds of sifaat=properties of being, abilities or attributes.

Sifaate zaatia=properties of existence and sifaate failia=capabilities to do things.

Although all sifaat of Allah are his personal therefore ever lasting yet his actions are termed HAADIS=accidental.

Since power and knowledge are sifaate zaati as well as sifate failia therefore it is possible to say whether Allah is all knowing and all powerful or not.

So there is nothing wrong if we do not discus this at all or even if we do but reach either conclusion.

Allah does not hold people responsible for things he has not bothered telling them.

So people who discuss taqdeer=predestination as a dogmatic belief in detail are just wasting their time either way. There are mullahs who would declare others kafir at drop of a hat. It is better we stay clear of such people, they are simply put not knowledgeable enough that we should follow them.

3)In the quran there are certain verses that tell us rules or laws of Allah eg laws of nature and law of cause and effect. So when Allah says that whatever ill happens to you is already written, this is what it means ie it is written whatever you do it will have some result. It is in other words chain of actions and reactions. Good actions are likely to end up with good results and bd actions are likely to end up with bad results.

Likewise death is already written in sense that if you do something that could result in death then you will die if you did that if that happened to you.

Mullahs have created their own sense of things here and there therefore the result is belief in fatalism.

People need to read the quran for themselves and understand it in light of real world realities not to render the quran senseless by way of make beliefs.

Re: What is predestined in our life?

I agree with point 1 and 3 by Mughal1, however -

1) Trying to comprehend the infinite (God, the universe, destiny, reality) by the finite (mankind) fails. Secondly, the only "infinite" in the equation is Allah/God. The rest (universe, heavens, earth, mankind) are all His creations, and finite. Logic is an attempt to reach a comprehensive conclusion to explain or elucidate a concept or object, and it does not fail with this question because:

2) Allah IS All-Knowing, All-Wise. ALLAH mentions it as His attributes in the Holy Quran several times, and the following should clear this up:

Allah’s name al-Alīm (the All-Knowing) is an emphatic form of the word ālim (knower). It appears 157 times in the Qur’an. For example:
“Indeed You are the All-Knowing, the Wise.” [Sūrah al-Baqarah: 32]
“And He is the All-Knowing, the All-Powerful.” [Sūrah Rūm: 54] and
“That is the determination of the Mighty, the All-Knowing.” [Sūrah al-An
ām: 96]
The general form of the name, al-Ālim, appears thirteen times in the Qur’an with reference to Allah. For instance:
“Knower of the unseen and the seen.” [Sūrah al-An
ām: 73] and
“Knower of the unseen, from whom not an atom’s weight is hidden.” [Sūrah Saba: 3]
The name al-
Allām appears four times in the Qur’an. This is the most emphatic form of the word, emphasizing the perfection and totality of Allah’s knowledge. For instance:
“Surely You have full knowledge of all that is unseen.” [Sūrah al-Mā’idah: 109]
Allah’s knowledge is complete and perfect. It comprehends the past, present and future and always corresponds to reality. Allah says:
“Does He not know what He has created, and He is the Most Kind, the All-Aware.” [Sūrah al-Mulk: 14]
Allah’s knowledge is neither acquired through learning nor preceded by ignorance. Allah’s knowledge compasses all things, as does His mercy and wisdom. Nothing in the heavens or on Earth escapes His notice. Allah says:
“There falls not a leaf but He knows it, nor a grain in the darkness of the Earth, nor anything green nor withered but it is all in a clear book.” [Sūrah al-Anām: 59]
Just as His knowledge is not preceded by ignorance, likewise it is not followed by forgetfulness. As Moses (peace be upon him) told Pharaoh:
“My Lord never errs, nor does He forget.” [Sūrah TāHā: 52]
Allah says:
“And verily, We shall recount their whole story with knowledge, for We have never absent.” [Sūrah al-A
rāf: 7]
Allah knows the minutest of details of all things hidden and manifest. He knows every generality and every particular, from the most abstract of concepts to the most concrete object. He has recorded the properties of everything in a book that is with Him.
Indeed, Allah tells us:
“What you (O humanity) have been given of knowledge is but little.” [Sūrah al-Isrā: 85] But He also teaches to offer Him the following prayer:
“Say: My Lord! Increase me in knowledge” [Sūrah Tāhā: 114] And He assures us:
“He has taught humanity what they did not know.” [Sūrah al-`Alaq: 5]

When we recognize something of the vastness of Allah’s knowledge, it should inspire us to be humble. When we realize the completeness of Allah’s knowledge and that nothing escapes His notice, it should make us more cautious about our actions and inspire us to self-assessment. This is why it is said: The one who knows the most about Allah, fears Him the most.

Re: What is predestined in our life?

yes,, the same i have listen tooo,, every thing have been distined about our lives, but God left us freely on booth of the ways,, which one you follow...

Re: What is predestined in our life?

Peace ZareenKhan

It is a fairly easy concept actually. The problem is that we need to understand things with new insights and knowledge, the terminology of the past may not be specific enough for us to understand things.

We have on one hand nature and on the other hand we have nurture ... these two BOTH affect the outcome of a person (destiny) ... also we have another third element to this which is cause and effect.

Our nature is the pre-programmed propensity which can be viewed in terms of advantage or disadvantage in terms of the doing of deeds. That those who have been given a disadvantage find it hard to do some good deeds and those who have been given advantage find it easy to do good deeds. Both are judged according to their good deeds, which are filtered out through their intentions and their relative capabilities or natures for doing those things. In developmental science we call this a persons trait.

For example a person may be born with the trait to be a murderer because today we can see patterns in the brain make-up of murderers but some of them can live their whole lives without doing a murder. So although a trait may be present with more effort a person can either prevent a bad trait from manifesting or where a positive trait is not present effort can render the good to come of it anyway.

So this part is in support of the hadith that our EFFORTS will be judged. Some people find it harder to lose weight and other easier - the exercise of a hard loser is greater than the effort of the easy loser.

This is nature ...

For nurture we have the training that we undertake to make things that initially present themselves as a disadvantage but through a nurturing process become easier to achieve. It is a discipline! ... This concept is supporter in the hadith that relates 5 things that if invest in them then their opposites will be averted. Such as health, wealth, youth, time and life. This shows that if we undertake the investment in these things then we get barakah in them. For health investment we exercise, for youth investment we capatilise on our charm and create a reputation, investment in money is always understood well, and investing in time to plan will help save time and doing all of these will delay death because the levels of stress will be reduced. So we have effort.

Then we have the cause an affect situation ... there are some things that catastrophically bend and out trump the outcomes of traits and effort and these are events that take place which create a wake of effects that cascade and alter the architecture of our living environment. These are things like natural disasters and global events or even things like du'a and prophetic scenarios and how the lives of two or more individuals interact with one another. These are truly destined events.

Things like Tawfiq, Barakah and Qadr work together. The ability to act means that someone still needs to act to achieve it. Once the act is done there still needs barakah to make it fruitful, to make the fruit take root all other destined events need to make it plausible.

Less tawfiq - easier judgement
More tawfiq - easier ability to do

Less barakah - easier judgement
More barakah - easier ability to have

Effects from outside events - easier judgement
No Effect from outside events - you reap what you sow
