What is meant by “Infraction” on GS?

I could not understand it’s meaning and purpose here on GS. Please elaborate Mods?

once you break a rule/insult others ,you get an infraction .Multiple infractions may lead to a ban

^Correct. Infraction is a warning that has penalty points tagged onto it. Infractions can vary and usually when you receive one, you'll know how many infraction points it is worth.
