I am a U.S. citizen and planning to move to Canada. I need to get some basic facts about Canada. Does Canada have credit history system like the U.S. (credit scoring?)? Do legal residents in Canada have Social Security (social security #??)? What cities are better than the others in terms of starting a business? Is it a good idea for a U.S. citizen to move to Canada and invest there?
Feel free to share your opinion, experience, criticism, suggestions, predictions, or whatever it is you would want to tell us about Canada. Thanks.
I hope it will answer most of yr queries regarding health care i, income security programs, including how to apply for your Social Insurance Number (SIN) , employment , employment rights and employment and labour standards , housing and education in Canada.
Credit system, insurance system, corporate policies, business taxes are same as US. Infact Social Security and Employment Insurance benfits are better than US since it is a social democratic country. Health care system is on the same lines as Britain and France.
If you move to Toronto, Montreal or Calgary, the businesses are flourishing and there are tonnes of oppertunity. All you need is good research, some experience, right business plan and capital.

So for someone like myself, will my credit history transfer over to Canada or will I have to start from scratch?
if you move to mtl, you have to be able to either pickup french really fast, or take a course in it, esp if you're planning to work.
I was thinking Calgary or Montreal. Thanks for the tip. I am not willing to learn another language. Looks like I could well be going to Calgary. Is it expensive? How is housing in Calgary?
How is hoteling business going in Canada and where will it most likely succeed?
Believe me and this is the most realistic advice about Canada you'll get anywhere: DON'T DO BUSINESS IN CANADA.
Seriously, you'll work long hours and won't have anything to show for it. These hotel business are best suited for some stop off the interstate in the US; in Canada you'll just lose your capital and destroy the financial institution's loan.

You're welcome :) .
ermm...ok? I was looking at several reliable websites and so far I haven't found anything negative. As far as hoteling business is concerned, didn't find anything negative there either. As a matter of fact, these sources are telling me otherwise. Supposedly, it's one of the best countries to live in according to the Human Development Index given annually.
So tell me, who should I believe? I knew someone would say something negative and I appreciate that. I don't like people to sugar coat anything that IS NOT. It's just so confusing..

Agreed that it is one of the best countries to live in; no doubt.
But i'm not sure I'd wanna do business there. You can read all the websites you want but what I'm telling you is based on hearing stories of family friends and others we know.
But its your money and your credit line.
Who knows, by the grace of Allah you may be successful and I sincerely pray that you do; but chances of small private businesses succeding in Canada are limited.
Good luck; may Allah give you prosperity in whatever you decide, ameen.
