Islam means submission to one god Allah and when you submit to someone you have to follow his orders(Quran) and get him pleased so he gives you a reward(janat).
This is Islam according to me!

I’m doing this coz I must explain this to non-muslim when they ask me what is Islam?
I think nothing can be added or subtracted from this passage!
Islam as you said means Submission to one and only GOD of universe, Allah.
Following the word of Allah(QURAN) and following the ways of the prophet and living the life like he did. That is what makes you a true Muslim.

Since you asked: If you are explaining this to a ahel-e-kitaab, make sure you mention who is Allah (sbwt) in terms they can understand: The God of Abraham and Moses. Draw some common threads within the pyramid. Explain to the person some of your beliefs as regards Abraham, Moses, and Isa (there was never any person in history called Jesus.... this a latinized name of Isa) and Mary. Put Islam in some context.
