They almost lost the test because of poor umpiring. What’s the deal?
Re: What is India's issue with UDRS?
Dont Know may be they r afraid of losing
Re: What is India's issue with UDRS?
^ And how does UDRS ensures defeat?
Re: What is India's issue with UDRS?
south asians are historically more conservative and traditional (by nature) and therefore resist change and hesitate embracing anything that deviates from status quo (as i see it).............so our mahan neighbors will come to terms with UDRS as well...but after UDRS will already be old and a newer technology will be on horizon!
Re: What is India's issue with UDRS?
I am clueless. Anything that ensures "more fair play" should be encouraged.
Now UDRS has some flaws and those should be fixed. For example i do not agree with "on field umpire call". To me its either OUT or not OUT. Simple is that. We should accept Machine's margin of error over human error (on field umpire error) because machines are always consistent in making error and humans are not.

You are exactly right...and not for the first time in my opinion.
Desis like to stick to tradition no matter how flawed rather than experiment with a new idea....esp an idea that involves technology. This is more true when you have cricket boards that are manned by oldies and politicians.
Rejecting the UDRS makes no sense at all if you think about it.
Just because it may not be 100% perfect does not mean that you don't take advantage of the >90% that is good.
I can see why batsmen (e.g. Tendulkar) are not warming up to UDRS...it undermines the "benefit of doubt" that batsmen otherwise enjoy esp in LBW decisions.
But think about it :
Without UDRS - I will go out on a limb and say that close to 50% of LBW decisions are either outright wrong or doubtful. In such circumstances why would anybody not make use of a technology that drastically cuts down on dubious decisions.
Its like a guy who is making 100K/yr rejecting a salary of 900K/yr because it is not 1 Million. Bad Analogy I know but you get my point.
Re: What is India's issue with UDRS?
I think there was this one series Ind vs SL where UDRS was used and India made all the wrong calls as to when to refer to UDRS. Kumble was the captain then I believe and everytime he referred to UDRS it was turned against him...whereas all the calls that Jaywardene made were right...
Ended up hurting India more than benefitting them...That experience left them scarred I guess...and since then they have been against the use of UDRS....
But it is ridiculous...not wanting to make use of technology to make better decisions...
Re: What is India's issue with UDRS?
the main reason is really that it really hurt him in the SL series where it was implemented..
going forward the argument is that its not 100% perfect yet but I agree with sum1.. so what??? at least use the 90%..
another issue is the implementation of various tools like hotspot etc etc requires a lot of money to be dropped everytime u want to use it.. but hey why not? bcci has enough money.. MORE than enough.. im not sure why BCCI has to worry about the money.. shudnt ICC pay for it?
i dont really buy the theory that india is rejecting is because its not traditional.. i feel its more about how it screwerd them in the SL series.. and the costs involved with it..
Re: What is India's issue with UDRS?
If SL could afford UDRS, I am not really sure if money is an issue here.
ICC laws should be uniform and not depend on one of the teams accepting or rejecting them. ICC should fund the technology if the hosting board cannot afford it.
Re: What is India's issue with UDRS?
kakaballi.. agreed that ICC should fund and implement it.. I am not sure exactly why the decision is left up to the playing countries.
Re: What is India's issue with UDRS?
What the heck is "UDRS" pardon my ignorance !
Re: What is India's issue with UDRS?
^ It's a referral system where a player can ask for a review by the 3rd umpire if he feels the on-field umpire made a bad decision.
Re: What is India's issue with UDRS?
I meant literally what UDRS stands for,,, Errr Umpire__________Referral System !!!?
Re: What is India's issue with UDRS?
God created google for a reason.

Hmm! Must be on FRIDAY,,,the day when I don't use my pc.
Tks anyhow!
Re: What is India's issue with UDRS?
I am a great believer in UDRS because even one bad decision can change the course of a game
Before the advent of neutral umpires almost every other test series was marred by bad and biased umpiring, not just desi umpires but also Australian and some english umpires were very biased. Imran Khan was the staunchest supporter of the concept of neural umpires in test cricket. The first-ever test series played under the supervison of neutral umpires (english umpires John Holder & Hampshire) was the 1989 series between India and Pakistan (played in Pakistan). Both Sachin Tendulkar and Waqar Younis made their test debuts during that series. All 4 tests were drawn because of the dull & slow nature of the pitches but there was no major controversy
I think there should be 5 referrals allowed per innings or 20 (4 innings) in a test match with a maximam of 3 min allowed per referral or 60 minutes (20x3) in a test match or 12 extra minutes per day. 60 min = 15 overs!
12 extra-minutes per day is a small price to pay if we can eliminate umpiring blunders and ensure 95% accuracy of decisions with UDRS. There will always be some doubt about say 5% of decisions even after referral but that is something we have to accept as part of the game. Benefit should go to the batsman if TV replays are inconclusive
Re: What is India's issue with UDRS?
Fully agreed Asif. The UDRS should be implemented for all games and if it needs more money to be perfected or applied then SPEND IT !! The boards and the ICC make enough money. Makes total financial sense as well to increase the accuracy of the decisions.
